What a round of upsets we have had in B Grade this weekend. Willetton got their second win for the season, Bullcreek upset Wembley, North Freo got over Kelmscott, and Scarborough got the job done against Collegians. It leaves us with an interesting race for relegation and the final two sides to round out the Top 5.
Well I'm going to point out the obvious here but when MrM woke up on Saturday he knew that we were going to be in for a treat weather wise. It was cold and windy and I knew playing at Carine Open Space we would be subject to all the elements. Luckily we weren't at The Showgrounds or we would have been swimming around to collect the football.
MrM was hoping the colts could get Wanneroo off to a good start but we were definitely short on numbers, a few boys called up for West Perth, a few boys playing league and reserves football and a few boys away at a music festival in Sydney, topped off with a few injured it was a good chance for more of the younger players to come through and earn a spot in the team.
Wanneroo started well in the colts, just as the heavens opened and the wind got stronger. I'll be honest (because I hear that's what women like...) it was probably the worst game of colts football I have watched all season. Both teams turned the ball over, and you can blame the elements but I'm sure it would have been the same type of game even on a dry day. The young colts boys from Wanneroo led all day and managed to continue to work hard, control their discipline (somewhat) and come away with a win. With 3 very winnable games to finish the season I'm sure our colts can come away with confidence and look towards next season.
The reserves was a decent contest between two sides that looked a little under manned. Wanneroo started well kicking the first, but with a strong breeze favouring The Carine Tavern end they knew they'd have to work hard all game. It was close for most of the day, number 23 for Hamersley probably had that number of touches in the first half. Both teams toiled hard in the wind and the rain but it was Hamersley who came away with the win.
It's fair to say MrM had such low expectations coming into Saturday's game woth the canteen and change room facilities available, I knew what I was in for and they weren't going to surprise me.
Change-rooms out the back of the building, you had to lock the door so that the skatepark kids who were smoking cones under the shelter and milling around in the hope that somebody left the door open so they could sneak in and steal a few valuables. Wanneroo's team manager had to keep the key, lock the door when people left and unlock the door when people needed it which wasn't ideal for anybody.
The canteen, well they didn't serve Hot Chips, which MrM knew already but was just hoping that a slim chance they might have cooked a few for the day, I purchased a chicken schnitzel burger which was quite good and was a shining light for an otherwise lacklustre canteen. Later on MrM wanted a sausage roll, but they only had a pasty left so I had to settle.
Overall MrM will score the following
Change-rooms 2/10
Canteen 4/10
Bar (free drink voucher from a player) 7/10
Not seeing a potential future Mrs Mysterious 0/10
Enough of me talking about the third world facilities, that we encountered at Carine let's talk about the league game.
Wanneroo were kicking with the breeze in the forst quarter and started string as they did the week before, slotting home the first goal of the match, they should have kicked a few more goals except for the fact that they couldn't kick the ball straight when kicking at goal, a few near misses and a few hit the post as Wanneroo the inaccurate Roos were 2.6 at quarter time. They continued to be quite inaccurate in the second term,as they contested heated up, a few hits and good tackles meant the game was well and truly on. The rain had eased up by now but the wind was causing havoc for the players, Wanneroo had a slender lead at the main break and kicking with the wind in the third quarter they had the opportunity to extend that lead significantly.
Wanneroo were again wasteful during the third quarter, missing targets and missing set shots on goal allowing Hamersely to get back into the game as they were quite good heading forward and very good kicking at goal. Wanneroo had opened up a 16 point lead heading into the last quarter. Hamersley started well kicking the first 2 goals making it a 4 point game as the Hamersley crowd got louder and the players got momentum, They then kicked the next 2 goals and opened up an 8 point lead with 7 minutes left. Well despite the crowd and despite playing away Wanneroo managed to kick 2 goals to hang on and win by 4 points. It was a good win for Wanneroo as they look towards playing finals, with every game a must win.
I look forward to hearing how Bullcreek upset Wembley, a great win for the Bombers.
