Thanks for posting the scores Rooty.
Results went the way as most of us expected, however interesting to see that Kelmscott didn't allow Gosnells more than 4 scoring shots. Not sure if that had anything to do with Perth having the bye, but who knows.
After a busy morning I managed to arrive at the colts game at half time not knowing what to expect, Mr Mysterious is actually afraid of the rain. A larger surface area means I get wetter than most. (Cue "that's what she said"...) and there a very few water proof bed sheets I can sew together to make myself a rain jacket. I saw that our colts had not kicked a goal, even though apparently in the first quarter when they kicked with a howling breeze. So after watching the second half I can safely say that, you cannot win games of the football, standing around the ball while you wait for the opposition to pick it up, then attempt to tackle. I know I'm not Nostradamus, but seriously put your head over the ball pick it up. Anyways Wanneroo were left lamenting one that got away and will need to improve come finals time. Not to take anything away from Kingsway they were very good. My dad would like the way the play, going straight up the middle of ground. All that and I only watched a half, imagine if I watched the whole thing.
Kingsway won by more than a few goals.
It was colder than a mother in-laws kiss at Kingsway on Saturday and what better way to warm yourself up that with a bucket of hot chips. after mustering up some courage to venture upstairs (Mr Mysterious is not a crowd favourite at Kingsway) my first thoughts were gee $4 for just a bucket of chips, but I was pleasantly surprised. Kingsway have a fish n chip shop mentality when it comes to hot chips and value. I was given enough chips to feed a small family, (well a normal family). Only complaint with the chips was I think I was given a mixture of 2 different batches. Or your deep frier needs it's fat/grease trays cleaned. I'll give you 8.5/10 1 point deducted for the minute of chips, half a point deducted for the crowd being so hostile towards me. Can a man not eat his kilo of chips in peace without being questioned?
Back to the football after I finished consuming my chips it was nearly quarter time. Quite a tight game of reserves football. Wanneroo came back in the second quarter kicking with the breeze and led at the main break. Just before the half time siren an incident occurred I'm not actually sure what went on, however I do know that the Kingsway supporters and coaching staff carried on like the umpire had just red carded the whole team. I think I the guy only got a yellow card so probably no need for that reaction. The second half was quite close again the breeze was definitely favouring the scoreboard end. Kingsway led at 3 quarter time. Where I thought it was appropriate to go get a drink or two, again I was greeted by a hostile environment. I quickly grabbed a drink and headed back down to join my fellow supporters. Wanneroo managed to hit the lead late in the last quarter only to see a Kingsway kick a goal right on the siren to give them victory. After 1 and a half games of football Mr Mysterious was still yet to see a win for Wanneroo and things were looking dangerous for our league team.
I'm not sure if Wanneroo won the toss or lost it but they were kicking into the wind. It seemed to work as Wanneroo kicked the first 2 goals of the game and were looking up and about. Then along came number 8 from Kingsway who wins the award for the best ever 3rd and 4th goal of the game celebrations. If you didn't see it I can describe it to you. It was like a long jumper, trying to pump up the crowd for his final jump at the Olympics mixed with a little of Lley Lleys C'MON. The crowd wasn't as excited for his goals as he was. Kingsway led at quarter time, but I think they should have utilised the breeze a little better. Wanneroo used the breeze well in the second and had a 3 point lead heading into the main break. After the first two time, I had not learnt my lesson. I again ventured to upstairs to wet my whistle. If Kim Beasley walked into the Labor Party today he wouldn't be greeted with such hostility as I was shown at Kingsway Football Club. What was even more disappointing is that not one person had even bothered to come say hello to me.
It was a very even third quarter as the wind and rain subsided for a quarter. It was an interesting quarter. Firstly the young boundary umpire showed he had a tremendous backbone and balls of steel as he correctly blew his whilste for an out of bounds decision while a Kingsway player kicked the ball which ended up going through the big sticks. I think Kingsway ended up kicking a goal from the stoppage. They were threatig to take it out to a 4 goal lead when a player was lining up for a shot at goal. Yet down the other end a Kingsway player blatantly punched a Wanneroo player in the face. Right in front of the umpire. Quoting the player as he ran off "I'll just take the two weeks thanks mate". If the game didn't have 3 umpires they would have never seen that incident. All three did a fantastic job all day I thought. Kingsway were down to 20 men after the full forward injured his hamstring in the second.
Wanneroo managed to fight back and kick a few goals with the scores nearly even at 3 quarter time. The last quarter showed tremendous fight from both teams. Both hard at the football and showed how much they wanted to win. Wanneroo kicked a goal to put them 9 points up. Kingsway knew it would be tough kicking 2 goals into the breeze and some players had the heads down already. Wanneroo kicked a goal after the siren.
A good day at the football I look forward to the next time they play, could be in a second semi final, preliminary final or the grand Final. With that win Wanneroo also confirmed they would finish top of the ladder. I expect a close game against Coolbinia next week as they have a lot to play for.
