I see Ayers Rock closes to climbers as of later today. I must say I have mixed feelings as I think it belongs to all of us and not just a few traditional landowners. Those same landowners have made a very good living out of it for a long time. The only mitigating factor as far as I'm concerned is that it hasn't been closed down completely so that no-one can access it at all as is the case with some parts of Arnhem Land where you need permission to enter. Just another example of PC taking over be it right or wrong.

Thank fark for that BC, sounds like it became a bit of a Must DO on the Bogan bucket list. And ferals turned the place into a shit hole either cos they couldn't get into the caravan park or were too tight arsed to pay so they shit and littered all over the place.
Get on your bike.

Climbing Uluru is ignorance at best or blatant disregard and selfishness at worst. If being politically correct means having care and respect for other people then what is so wrong with that. Its a sacred site to these traditional owners so we should all respect that. If it were a Church, Mosque or even your own front garden bed that you care for, you wouldn't want people stumbling all over and disrespecting that space. Too many people feel hard done by because they can't have their own way all the time and its a disgraceful reflection on our society.

It may be a sacred site to a handful of indigenous people who inhabit the area Blunder but at day's end it's a rock. By your analogy, maybe people should be banned entering churches, graveyards and the like if it offends some of us. TBH, I don't have a view on whether it's right or wrong but I only hope they don't close the thing altogether so no-one can visit even just for viewing purposes as it belongs to all of us imo.

There are no plans to close it completely. People will still be able to view it up close. This is my point, a rock you to is a sacred site to others. Small "inconveniences" such as restricting people from climbing the rock is not going to ruin anyone's life and is a small concession that shows some respect to the so-called "handful of indigenous people" who consider it an important site. It talks to an overall higher level of respect that this country could show to its first peoples.

Nope, happy enough highlighting the ignorance of the old timers who still live in yesteryear. Times are changing old fella. Sorry if that makes you feel sad on the inside or diminishes your self worth.

My understanding is that the local Aboriginal population own the land that Uluru is on and were granted legal rights to the site under the Native Title Act. So like any owners of land they have the right to determine what happens on their property. Any guests need to be respectful of the wishes of the owners. It has been made abundantly clear over a number of years by the Aboriginal people that the rock has religious significance and they do not want people climbing it. How far do you reckon you would get if you climbed on the roof of St Mary's Catherdral or the local mosque. Its got bugger all to do with political correctness and is more about respect for the law and peoples culture and beliefs, even if they are different from ours

You're probably quite correct Mike but that's where I have a problem with ANY group being given ownership rights to something of national significance with all the powers that go with it including prohibiting others from access. Those views relate in particular to landmarks which should be for everyone to enjoy not just one particular cohort.
