I can't believe they have invited Mrs Merkel to the ceremony for the German invasion of Poland; this is despite the fact, of course, that the Polish are still trying to re-build some of their infra structure destroyed by the German army. It is a load of ahistorical rubbish.

Perhaps they can get her to do the tour of Auschwitz/Birkenau. If she’s even partly human, that will rip her heart out.

shark58 -- quite right, I would never visit the place, far too upsetting. I feel sorry for the Polish that the bastards committed such crimes in their country and they will have to host it forever.

I do not know how Merkel made it to be the leader of the Conservative party in Germany. She always claimed that her family opposed the GDR regime, and yet, she was actually born in the West and taken to East Germany -- in other words her parents were hardened communists, people whom moved in the opposite direction to the 3 million Germans whom migrated to West Germany in the post-war era.

No mention of hardened communists in this wiki entry - which may, of course, be accurate or may not:

Religion played a key role in the Kasner family's migration from West Germany to East Germany.[32] Merkel's paternal grandfather was originally Catholic but the entire family converted to Lutheranism during the childhood of her father,[28] who later studied Lutheran theology in Heidelberg and Hamburg. In 1954, when Angela was just three months old, her father received a pastorate at the church in Quitzow [de] (a quarter of Perleberg in Brandenburg), which was then in East Germany. The family moved to Templin and Merkel grew up in the countryside 90 km (56 mi) north of East Berlin.[33]

I may be wrong and don't mind being corrected. As far as I'm aware, Poland received no compensation after the war? Perhaps inviting Merkel is a step in that direction.

thanks for the posts men

jack: the father would not have had the position in the church without the support of the communist party. He was known as 'Red Kasner' in the GDR. Does Angela ever mention this? It is the same with Stange, the football coach. He had top jobs in East Germany because he was politically reliable -- in other words Perth Glory employed a smiling Stalinist.

wag: I would agree, instead of paying others compensation the Germans got Marshall aid, the French set up the EEC so they had -- a trade partner, which has made them rich -- previously the Germans traded mostly with the east --- and they have had their defence bill subsidised by NATO for seventy years. Until the lat 1940s they also got food aid from Britain via Australia. This is one of the reasons why Australia had rationing until 1949 and Britain until the early 1950s. Not bad for starting a war

Of course, the poor old Poles got none of the above because they were in the Soviet orbit.
