they inherited 8000 in detention, its down to about 800. The cost saving of emptying the camps has been enormous and now it will all go up.

This new piece of legislation will be an enormous selling point for people smugglers. Even if as Jack suggests it's only for those currently on Manus and Nauru (which I'm not convinced it is after reading the ambiguous amendments to the Bill), people smugglers will be very quiet on that point and won't care as long as they can load up boats with a promise of eventual settlement in Australia on medical grounds for the poor buggers willing to take the risk and part with their cash.

There is no grandfather clause saying it's for current detainees only. That amendment was mentioned by Shorten but I don't believe it was accepted and included in the draft bill.

BC sorry but i have just broken a new years resolution, that I would not respond or got involved in non football threads as they always fraught with danger and more so that not all folk on here are as rational as you, I am/have deleted my posts

Don't be shy about giving your own opinion Grump. Memo to Swan42 : let's see the next news poll after this bill is passed. Lol

DD I ain't shy as you would be well aware but I find that this type of topic is often reduced to quite petulant commentary and as is oft the case can cause rifts. Having said that I will join in for a little comment as I can see that some folk are responding to spin and innuendo rather than fact.

And the oscar for biggest political stunt of the century goes to Scott Morrison for announcing the reopening of Christmas island now all we to wait for is for the knowledgeable folk to jump on the spin and fall for the bait! Cannot wait!

Blood will be on the grubby hands of Bill Shorten his band of cronies if/when lives are lost at sea. He is a grubby little man and it will be one of the darkest days in politics in Australia if this bloke becomes Prime Minister. And a big part of the blame for this bill being passed is the weak sheila that quit the Liberal party due to claims of being bullied during the leadership spill. Goes to prove she hasn't got what it takes to cut the mustard in politics.

Gotta agree Grump...it is a risk he's taking...if no boats show up then he'll look pretty silly. In saying that, he's only got until May to worry about it as he's be in opposition after the election.

DD Hinch was the final vote in the Senate.I think it's the first time he's voted against the government since he's been a Senator.

Based on the theories espoused by some on here, in the wider conservative (and in some cases, hysterical) community, it will be a "return to open borders" if Labor gets up in May.

If that is the case (which it demonstrably is not), wouldn't the people smugglers be smart to keep their boats (did someone mention 400) out of the water until June, just to make sure the lyin' Libs don't pull off a surprise win based around a "border security" scare campaign.

And hopefully gtr it will cost the likes of Hinch and Phelps their seat at the next election.

Jack Labor has proven they can't be trusted when it comes to border security and they are the facts mate. The people smugglers are already getting the ball rolling and people will risk their lives to come here. Short ass can't be trusted. They are firmly snuggled up in bed with the Greens again, another reason they lost government. This vote has exposed the weak and handed the government a lifeline.

This bill is nothing more than pandering to the bleeding hearts that believe we are responsible to deliver world class health to illegal immigrants and what sort of medical care did they receive in their country of origin? The fact is the medical treatment they HAVE RECEIVED since being in detention is probably the best health care they have ever received. But we've got grubs like the greenies that go over there and tell the illegal refugees that they are entitled to even better.
