It is good to see that the Commonwealth government is setting up a centre to commemorate Sir John Monash and the first Australian Imperial Force. Lord Turnbull is on a bit of a roll as I also agree with his decsion not to grant SIr John a Field Marshall's baton. Tim Fischer, I am afraid, has an issue on this question which is unwarrantted.

AR this might shock but I believe it was Tony Abbott's initiative.

Yep, long over due, as some who has a great uncle buried there and whos great grandfather spent 4 years on the Western Front its about time the regontion happened.

Bazza: I agree. The Western Front has long been neglectted in our history writting. The British never gave a baton to Sir Henry Rawlinson, his commanding officer, as you would be aware, so I am not sure why he thinks Sir John should have got one either, then or now.

Yep and dont forget William Birdwood became FM.
