A/man I believe the plebiscite would be passed. The problem would be that when it gets down to the actual referendum there would be divide and conquer again.

I don' think a survey would go well for repulicans. Either way, they have to come up with a referendum question to put against the monarchy which will be even harder. It is possible that the ALP may try and do a con job and not put the monarchy to a referedum if they win the survey. In other words, the referndum only asks people to choose between two republics. This of course would be totally unconstitutional and very dangerous for the country.

Just wonder Ark when we do become a Republic. Some time in the second part of this century. Will there ever be a referendum to become a Monachy again if we don't like the republic.

gtr: I agree, we live in a stable state. The only people whom would be pleassed if Australia became a republic would be anglophobes, the Chinese and the Russians -- the last two would be most thrilled indeed.

I was wondering when this issue would be raised. So much was said about the cost of the SSM plebiscite, we dont need another one anytime soon. I doubt there would be anywhere near the voter response for a republic than there was for SSM as there is little or no emotional baggage attached to a republic vote unlike there was with the SSM vote. A change to a republic will have virtually no impact on Australians day to day life where as the SSM makes a difference to a significant percentage of the population, not just the LGBT etc community but to their family and friends. becoming a republic imho is a complete waste of time and money as it wont improve anyones life one iota.
