Another video from the SANFL. I like this quote I found by Mark Schwerdt from the Footy Almanac about Sturt back in the day.

"The Blues looked like they had come from the local Baptist Church gathering, the straight-laced (but lace-out) Chessell, Bagshaw and Hicks looking more Peter, Paul and Mary than Mick, Keef and Brian. They played with a grace and style that avoided body contact, not because they were scared, but because they were above all that."

Paul Bagshaw added to the AFL Hall of Fame in 2016

The other guy from that era at the Double Blues was Rick Davies - great player who I think came over here very late to West Perth (can't recall him playing for the Cardies though)

Actually there was another freak of a Full-Forward over there at Port Adelaide Magpies at that time too - don't know how he hasn't been inducted TBH

Tim Evans who kicked a career total of 1044 goals in the SANFL (second only to Ken Farmer of North Adelaide 1417 goals)

Yeah Davies was an amazing player. From what I understand he lived in WA for many years after his career and maybe still does? I guess we didn't know much about him, so never called upon him to coach or get involved in the media.

I would love it if someone here in WA chased him up and did an interview or got him involved in WA footy.

The Sturt v Port thing fascinates me. The "well to do" Sturt players with their skills and avoidance of contact compared to the no-nonsense, "none of that Sturt checkside shit" attitude of Fos Williams and Port.

This is the 1983 sturt season where Davies kicked 151 goals. Great highlights.

As I mentioned in the Russell Ebert topic I followed Port Adelaide back in the days the SANFL GF was telecast live on the ABC and you are right Southy Tim Evans kicked a poultice of goals for the Magpies but struggled a little in the State games vs WA & Vic.
LH Rick Davies was interviewed on TABradio by Wattsie & Marty Young in their Where Are They Now segment must be 15 years ago now and he was living in WA in Carine at that stage and had been for quite a few years but im not sure if he still is over here?

Yeah, he was definitely still here in the early 00's and I embarassed myself in finding out.

I got a ticket to a Crows game through a friend and we went back to the Crows function after the game.

There was a girl there, a South Australian - and I was trying to impress her with my knowledge of the SANFL. I mentioned Rick Davies and the famous incident, or so it is said, where he lost a nut in the Unley Oval mud one afternoon.

She goes, "yeah why don't you ask my uncle Rick himself because he's standing one foot behind you and can probably hear every word you are saying"

I used to go to all the State Games at Subi Oval as a kid against both SA & Vic and I definitely remember Rick Davies playing in a couple of those vs SA. He was a fantastic player as were others I got to witness first hand in those games Ebert, Cornes, Blight, Platten, Bradley, Kernahan, Craig, Carey et al.
Great great days but sadly over for both WA & SA footy fans whilst the Vics have lost stuff all but still whinge & whine when you speak to them! :S

There were footballers who looked like footballers - and then there was Grenville Dietrich (West Torrens/Nth Adelaide)

This guy was huge , I remember a piece of footage vaguely years ago - he was built like a Wharfie cum Tow Truck driver his jumper barely fit but geez he could get the pill & bag goals

Actually the other thing with Rick Davies was that he spent a year or two with Hawthorn as their Ruckman (I recall number 11 but could be wrong on that)

Yeah he did go across to Hawthorn but by that stage, like Cornes, Ebert, Peake and one or two others, he was fairly old.
