The game has evolved as with every other sport with the times, go and have a look at Soccer from the eighties or basketball, every sport evolves, they are better athletes they train harder and have better facilities, same as Aussies rules.

The simple fact is theres a minority on here that don't like the AFL or the way its played, and most are WAFL supporters the reality is as BH stated the game at grass roots level is played the same way as the national comp with the press or flood pretty much implemented by every side.

The facts are the majority choose AFL over WAFL , where are all the supoorters in my age group, I see them at AFL games not the WAFL.

I like my AFL footy, I still like my WAFL and Amateur footy the national comp was always gonna happen it happens in every country in the world so Aussies rules was always going to follow, some people are still stuck in the seventies, eighties I guess.Lucky for them we are the 21st century and we have the internet where we can go and whinge about it.

Dont disagree with this at all PN, BUT the big thing is our rules not only change year by year but week by week, soccer etc have hardly changed the rules every year.
The change the rules to appease everyone, it has become a pantomine game rather than the great SPORT that it once was. The crowd are more likely to become "involved" with a deliberate out of bounds call than they are a dashing run through the centre by a gun player.....is this what we want??

I agree regarding the rule changes the AFL is to reactive, do you really think that Soccer and Basketball hasn't evolved to be a better level than the eighties ?

As for crowd involvement there wouldn't be a sport in the world where the crowd screams and rants and try and influence the ref or umpires , the games I attend the crowd gets very vocal when a Fyfe or Walters goes anywhere near the footy like I said some people are still stuck in the eighties where THEY think footy was better but thats a very small minority that think that, the only people I hear that from are from are the over 40/50s.

Some one said its being Americanised I'd like to know how, I don't see cheer leaders their is no half time entertainment, there's a shot clock apparently I havnt seen it.

Unquestionably the way Aussie Rules was played in the 80s, pre-Eagles, was a much better spectacle than what is played today.

Yeah well that's your opinion, tell that to the players from that era that disagree with you.

You think that having 36 players up one end and players literally coming to a standstill because there are no players to kick the ball to is a good spectacle? That the majority of ruckmen have no idea how to tap to a player's advantage is a better spectacle? That seeing a player kick a goal and then run off the ground is a better spectacle? etc. etc. etc.

Like I said that's your opinion the game evolves, I'm guessing the style of footy of the fifties is a different level to the eighties to what it is now, what you liked in those times is completely different to what today's generations like.

I would love to see a dropkick league evolve for shits and giggles in the off season. 9's is great but a dropkick league would bring some fun back in to the equation

funny enough PN I did slot one from 25 rugby style playing against your mob at Light street many moons ago. Late 90's would have been. Was all in aid of rubbing salt in to the wounds of me old Lano childhood mate Frenchy during junk time.

Unka2 Aussie Rules, note not AFL as AFL is a competition NOT A SPORT, is the only game in the world where the rules are umpired differently quarter to quarter WITHIN a game. Other sports like hockey have changed their rules over a period of time to make the sport a better spectacle, whereas the changes to the laws of Aussie Rules have had the opposite affect.

Agree, also most rules in other sports are not open to so much interpretation. Then we have 4 blokes umpiring with different interpretations, it just cant work properly.

Theres a few things going wrong with the Afl . Decisions made recently are problems on the horizon.
Two teams in Nsw and Qld are totally unsustainable long term. The Nsw sides are going great in the premiership window. But 7 years down the track when Gws are in rebuild, they will be back to there 6,000 a game.
The players association in pay negotiations again. The top level players and all Afl players deserve there cut of this profitable game. But the foundations of the game are week.Junior level, country leagues and all the well documented problems with tier 2 football..The Afl has to make all levels of Football strong. That sleeping giant Soccer is building in Australia.

Agree with most you say, I do question about how our game evolved though. Of course the players have evolved just as all other sports people have but the game itself has evolved from rule changes and not naturally.
If we had not had one rule change since 1990 do you think the AFL would still be watched in large numbers as it is now? I think definitely yes.
Sport should not evolve through rule changes, the sport should just naturally evolve by the players making it better.
Having said that the AFL now must continue to change rules yearly as they have changed so many they must forever tweek them now.
I follow the AFL, WAFL and the WAAFL and like them all. The great days of the WAFL are forever behind us and not coming back. The people spoke with their feet back in 1987.

DW with the current crop of umpires you could very well be pinged for incorrect disposal if you tried a drop kick.
