As usual, there are some good posts on here. I would just add that, because of all the over-coaching -- which is made possible by the number of interchange players -- it is similar to watching a combination of rugby league/union and soccer without the off-side. Bloody stupid.

Fundamentally, Aussie Rules, traditionally. is a stop start game: one takes a mark and literally goes behind the mark to take one's kick. It is very simple. If I had the power I would do the following:

go back to two interchange players, and further, restrict the number of changes
make it compulsory to kick from a mark or free kick.

Over to everybody else.

DG I think they introduced half the rule; you had to kick after a free, and you are right, people got confused at times. Under my proposal there would be no confusion. It would stop the 'crab side ways play and cut down the back wards hand ball which, I cannot stand myself.

I was brought up with WAFL in the eighties and loved it, but i've moved on from those times and into the 21st century, the WAFL team I support has made that a much easier transition.

The game has evolved as with every other sport with the times, go and have a look at Soccer from the eighties or basketball, every sport evolves, they are better athletes they train harder and have better facilities, same as Aussies rules.

The simple fact is theres a minority on here that don't like the AFL or the way its played, and most are WAFL supporters the reality is as BH stated the game at grass roots level is played the same way as the national comp with the press or flood pretty much implemented by every side.

The facts are the majority choose AFL over WAFL , where are all the supoorters in my age group, I see them at AFL games not the WAFL.

I like my AFL footy, I still like my WAFL and Amateur footy the national comp was always gonna happen it happens in every country in the world so Aussies rules was always going to follow, some people are still stuck in the seventies, eighties I guess.Lucky for them we are the 21st century and we have the internet where we can go and whinge about it.

Agree with everything you said PN but the AFL and local AFL clubs need to recognise comps like the WAFL are a vital cog in the wheel and must ensure its survival. Without comps like the WAFL kids could get lost to other sports. I think someone posted recently the WAFL has produced more AFL players currently playing than the other states. Not sure that included Victoria, you would think they lead the way by weight of numbers.

Dont disagree with this at all PN, BUT the big thing is our rules not only change year by year but week by week, soccer etc have hardly changed the rules every year.
The change the rules to appease everyone, it has become a pantomine game rather than the great SPORT that it once was. The crowd are more likely to become "involved" with a deliberate out of bounds call than they are a dashing run through the centre by a gun player.....is this what we want??

Unka2 Aussie Rules, note not AFL as AFL is a competition NOT A SPORT, is the only game in the world where the rules are umpired differently quarter to quarter WITHIN a game. Other sports like hockey have changed their rules over a period of time to make the sport a better spectacle, whereas the changes to the laws of Aussie Rules have had the opposite affect.

Actually WA supply 15.6% approx this year, that is 121 players. Of these Eagles have the most which is 24 on their list.

I agree regarding the rule changes the AFL is to reactive, do you really think that Soccer and Basketball hasn't evolved to be a better level than the eighties ?

As for crowd involvement there wouldn't be a sport in the world where the crowd screams and rants and try and influence the ref or umpires , the games I attend the crowd gets very vocal when a Fyfe or Walters goes anywhere near the footy like I said some people are still stuck in the eighties where THEY think footy was better but thats a very small minority that think that, the only people I hear that from are from are the over 40/50s.

Some one said its being Americanised I'd like to know how, I don't see cheer leaders their is no half time entertainment, there's a shot clock apparently I havnt seen it.

Unquestionably the way Aussie Rules was played in the 80s, pre-Eagles, was a much better spectacle than what is played today.
