The wife and I went to Adelaide last weekend and we went down to Glenelg on the tram to watch Centrals play Glenelg. Being a West peth supporter and a Centrals supporter I meandered to the Centrals crowd to scream for my team. Glenelg’s Glideroll oval is pathetically short, [Norwood oval is shorter] and the scoreboard and time clock are so old it’s not funny. I have to say that the reserve teams on both sides have some bloody big blokes especially the ruckmen. Both league teams walk out of the same underground race and there is not much fanfare. Also at the quarter time huddles, spectators can’t cross over the square, the team huddles are very close in the square and the umpires are between the huddles, so the umpires are very close to the spectators. Some Centrals supporters wanted to know if I have met John Duckworth and one central supporter wanted my West Perth shirt. The Glenelg merchandise tent had everything, cups, pens, shirts, you name it, they had it, but Centrals had nothing. Admission fee was $14.00 and the budget was $3.00. The budget was dedicated to the Centrals v Glenelg game with bugger all information about the players, piss poor. My wife loved the pokies in the Glenelg club rooms and if you want a full roast meal, it’s there. Why can’t we in the West have pokies in the wafl and only the wafl to generate income to all the clubs?

I wonder what you think the crowd number would have been?
Did they have a decent attendance at the game or was it like our crowds?

The crowd was around 2500 to 3000 people. Nobody in the stands, everybody is around the fence.

I'm uncertain of having pokies at the Wafl clubs.
There is too much gambling nowadays, and some people could be attending for the wrong reasons. Do realise it's common in other parts of the country and has been for many years. Then again are people going to the footy to gamble or attending the footy for the footy? Would be interesting to discover how much extra income would be generated by it. How is a decent revenue stream measured and how many machines are needed to produce the extra income I wonder? Do the clubs get to use all the income generated by these machines or just a portion. Or will the so called commission and state government also have their finger in the pie? If so, why is that?

Got a feeling it was Glenelg Oval, but don't quote me on it.

Glenelg Oval is also home to the Glenelg Cricket Club and was primarily used for cricket prior to the football club entering the SANFL in 1920. The club is also known as The Bays as Glenelg is situated on the shores of Holdfast Bay, the site of first settlement in SA.

The venue was used for the 2015/16 Sheffield Shield final. The Chappell brothers are products of the Glenelg Cricket Club.

Former West Perth star Ross Gibbs (father of Bryce) played for Glenelg FC.after his days as a Cardinal, also Greg Bennett from Perth moved to The Bays. Glenelg FC also produced the Cornes family of players.

There was an old underground air raid shelter at the northern end of the ground. (Not sure if it still exists) The oval is the smallest in playing area of any league level ground in Australia. In good conditions two good kicks from fullback and centre of the ground would see a goal scored. Kevin Abley to Kevin Rowe - if anyone can remember.

Kevin Abley & Kevin Rowe played for The Bays in the mid 60's.I vividly remember them from my school days in Adelaide

Peter "Super" Carey could fairly roost a footy. Games record holder at Glenelg with 448 appearances for The Tigers. Also SANFL record.

Traditionally the Glenelg captain each season wears number 5 to honour the great man.

Testing the memory now Grassy.

Graham Cornes Number 12
Stephen Kernahan Number 4

I stand corrected.

I never saw Sticks play for The Bays. However his late father Harry was captain back when I was in Adelaide.

I do remember Graham Cornes. He started as a very skinny 17 year old and played his first game against Sturt at Unley Oval. First kick off the side of the boot and out of bounds on the full. No penalty for on-the-full in those days. Spectacular player and knew no fear.
