Racing fan or not I reckon most on here would have heard Max Simmons call a race back in the day as they crossed during the footy in winter or cricket in summer. Sad to say another famous voice is gone

A wonderful racecaller who will be sadly missed by all West Australian racegoers and in particular those in the North-west and Ascot and Belmont regulars from a bygone era. A long standing Swan Districts supporter

Yeh with all these childhood or younger life icons dropping off the perch like Bowie, Frey, Stevie Wright, Judgie, Simmons etc it does make you sit back and do the maths in your head if you know what I mean?

RIP Max Simmonds

A great race caller on the ABC for many many years and now joins the ABC's other long standing legendary trots caller (and footy, cricket, athletics....) Georgie G upstairs.
As 42 alluded to Max was a Midland boy and a Swans man and from memory Max's son played at Swans back in the day as well.

Would be a very entertaining commentary box upstairs I reckon!

I have read various blogs about how the disgraced Stuart Shenton was better than Max, but who would remember his voice? Yet we can all hear Max`s

Stuart Shenton was the 6pr caller of the trots & Trevor Jenkins the gallops until TJ wanted to start calling the footy and cricket at the ABC around 1984-85 then Shenton moved to the gallops and Darren McAulley took over the trots at that time and that stayed the status quo for around the next decade until Shents was charged for an illegal activity at Ascot and removed from the role as gallops racecaller to be replaced by McAulley who has been there ever since tho not on 6pr anymore which was replaced by TAB Radio around the turn of the century.
Shents was definitely a great colourful racecaller who didnt mind giving the jockeys/horses a spray on air when they deserved it especially if his money was on said horse!
Max Simmonds and George G were the gallops and trots callers respectively at that same period of time from the 70s-90s on the ABC.
Jimmy Chadwick called both trots and gallops for Channel 7 which had the replays on of a Sunday morning which used to then lead into World Of Sport ...aaah the good old days! :)
