There isn't a railway in the world that would operate without making a loss I don't believe so I don't think the fuel price has any long term impact, they should just build them regardless of whether people use them immediately or not "Build it and they will come". Thankfully Roe 8 looks like being quashed as this is not looking any further than 10-15yrs, when are we going to get a Govt to plan for the next 50 yrs+? This why Perth will always be a backwater 20 yrs behind everyone else

We can all remember a photograph of an empty railway car in The West on the Mandurah as part of their ongoing daily push to campaign for the Liberal Party opposition. We also ll know how successful the Mandurah line is and we also know it was a Liberal government which closed the Freo line.

Here is a trick question what passenger railway line has the Liberal/Country (National) Party since the Second World War have they built in Perth?

also, which Emperor has sanctioned the waste of Public Money to change the names of the Esplanade Bus and Train stations to Betty's Jetty Bus and Train stations?

Who ever forms the next State Government is stuck with this APPALLING GST setup.WA are now recieving back $0.38 in the $1.Going as low as $0.13 in two years time.Just fix it you Canberra ********.Federation gave us the right to charge royaltys over our mineral deposits.

Barnett and Court should have studied the gst arrangement a little more carefully before they AGREED to it and bowed down to their federal liberal masters back in 99.
Didn't hear Barnett complaining too much about it when he was riding the mining boom AND receiving large gst payments a few years back.

Richard Courts Goverment Passed the Mandurah Rail Act in 1999, construction started in 2000 and was well underway by the time Gallop game to power and decided to reroute it.

In 1969 The Brand Government completed the new Prospector Passenger Line to Kal and replaced the old overnight service with the new day time Prospector Carriage Service that the Coalition government had ordered especially for the nee line, this cut the journey time by 6 hours, the service started in 1971.

Don't kid yourself Bazza. The joke that was tricky Dicky's Mandurah line which was going to go through Oats St station would have taken longer than driving to Mandurah. That is why we got the Thornlie spur line.

I would also point out I said "built in Perth". That obviously was metropolitan rail line and therefore the Prospector is not relevant.

I noticed you didn't try to defend the indefensible re renaming the Esplanade Busport and Train station to Betty's Jetty.

Legistalation was PASSED in 1999 Authorising the contruction by the Libs NOT the ALP that is a set in stone FACT -Swan your kidding yourself, the LNP Gov planned and built the Mandurah line construction was well underway funded it and planned it and begung building it , all Gallop did was change the route, costing more. The benefit now is we also have a Thornlie Spur line.

OK sorry I missed your Perth"only" bit, I thought you were talking about Passenger Rail, clearly regional WA and the people that live there do not count in your brain washed ALP mind, BTW the new line also resulted in the Construction of the the new Passenger Terminal in East Perth, as well as the Avon Link for passengers in the Metro hinter land out to Northam etc.

How many regional passenger lines have the ALP built? Generally the ALP do nothing for regional WA infrastructure wise.

I would of thought the renaming of the two stations made perfect sense, after all the entire part of the city will be associated with EQ. Makes more sense for Tourists etc.

The minute fuel prices PEAKED all lot more started using trains, now they have fallen off so have the passengers, for example the Mandurak line peaked in 2012 with 21, 000,000 passengers PA, since then it has fallen by 1 Million passengers to 20 Million each year, it has not come close to the 21 Mill peak.

I also believe paid parking is a mistake - that is also putting people off the system.

Rail in the UK now makes a profit, owned by Richard Branson, Gov got rid of the loss making British Rail sold it off and BRANSON turned it around - now makes a QUID.

I agree on ROE 8, it will be one of the BIGGEST issues at the next election, I am DEAD against it.

Apart from wrecking the southern suburbs and bibra lake etc, it will lock TRUCKS into the dead duck port, Freo is already to old and to small for any serious CONTAINER port expansion , the road system in and out is restricted to one point. Instead of building a road to nowhere they urgently need to buuld a new greenfields Container port and get container and trucks out of Fremantle, it is so far behind the times, Sydney, Melbourne all moved their ports Years ago and converted inner city Ports into Cruise Ship Entertainment area, like Darling Harbour, that is what needs to happen to Fremantle.

Grassy wrote: Guess he figures he can recoup the expenses when The City of PERTH Act is passed through the Legislative Council in February, with the help of the Backflipping ALP.

Tony Simpson has pretty much told Subiaco's Mayor,Heather Henderson,Get Used to It!It will come into FORCE July 1.Don't you the Sheer Arrogance of Simpson as well?!

She's not prepared to give up though. But that's up to the ALP to Seriously Reconsider their stance on this,Admit they were Wrong,if they think themselves to be Fit to Govern.

This is a Serious Test for Mark McGowan and he'd be a Fool to think this won't hurt his election chances. What's holding you back Opposition Leader?Union heavies of the ALP with their Snouts inthe same trough as the Liberal Party,City of PERTH and UWA?

Do you want to Govern for the people of WA?Or do you want to pander to a few mates, even strange ones like Colin Barnett and his mates? No wonder he feels
Iike he's got the next election wrapped up,when by rights he should get the boot.

What's holding you back on doing the Right thing?Tell us!Don't give us any Self Justifying Bullshit, that you did when you passed the Act through the Legislative Assembly.Defeat the Act with the Nationals,Greens and anyone else that opposes this Obscene Bill that Has NO Mandate Whatsoever and Put it on the Backburner. For quite some time, though not Indefinitely.A 3 year rethink will do for starters.

This could be your last chance Mark.Don't think for 1 minute by siding with the Libs the Backlash won't happen to both of you. There is another way to Slap you both down in 2017.You have together Both Betrayed the Electorate of WA on this and 2 Referendum Questions we gave a Clear NO to!

Vote down the City of Perth Act Now!

GRASSY, you seem to be beating the drum on this issue a bit, but is it really on the radar compared to the BIG TICKET items of DEBT, ROE 8, Transport and the Mining Downturn..NOPE, read SPANGNOLOS article in the ST, lays it out well and like me TIPS a ALP win based on these issues, btw COP Act never rated a MENTION.

dont be so sure Baz...18 months to an election is a long time and don't forget, the City Link, Perth Gateway, Betty's Jetty, new stadium, Childrens Hospital and so on will all be in advanced stages of completion which will allow this government to try and convince voters they've achieved so much since being in.

Agreed the GST setup from day1 was against WA.Proving to be a real expensive mistake from the WA point of view.
