I had a look at the Metronet plan. Looks pretty good to me. Uses a lot of existing infrastructure or median strips on major highways. Not unworkable at all.

The Ellenbrook line would deviate from Bayswater station, up Tonkin Highway, then turn right along Reid Highway, then around Lord St go noth through vacant land up to Ellenbrook.

The SouthCircle Line would use the existing line that already exists between Guildford and Fremantle. They already used a bit of that to build the Thornlie Spur. I guess the section to the airport must run in part underground because there's no other way to get close to both terminals from what I can see.

The Wanneroo Line would take the same path as the ellenbrook Line from Bayswater but would turn left at Reid Highway. Then I assume would turn North at alexander Drive and continue on past Gnangara Lake and through vacant land in Gnangara and the back end of Wanneroo before terminating about 1.5km from the main shopping centre. Not sure it can get any closer unless it goes underground.

The North Circle Line is the same as the Wanneroo Line but extends further West down Reid Highway until it links up with the existing Perth to Currambine line.

I wish they would consider bringing back the Kalamunda/Hills Lines which closed in the 1960's. They would be gold now. But for some reason they dug up the lines as well. Fools! They also dug up the final section of line that went all the way to Rockingham Beach. That too would be gold now. Fools! They also dug up the bulk of the line that went from Armadale to Fremantle. That might have become handy now.

Would have been nice if some of the Nothern Suburbs lines went closer to the beach. Perhaps a line to Hillarys/Whitfords and one to Ocean Reef/Mullaoo particularly when the new Ocean Reef Marina is built.

People know what the parking is like at Hillarys Marina in winter, would have made sense to put a station there.

Hopefully there is a plan to build a kind of circle route tramway from Glendalough station to Scarborough to Hillarys to Warwick. That would solve part of the problem at least.

Yeh, the airport line is definately planned to go under.

Metronet is a good plan in its relative simplicity - sadly though if Liberal win again we're very unlikely to see any real movement on rail infrastructure for at least 5 years.

All they have done is come up with a name for a light rail system - they don't intend to do anything about it until the end of their next term - ludicrous!

Its amazing to think that Richard Court wanted the Mandurah line to just be an extension of the Armadale line - we'd really be in trouble now if he'd gotten his way with that one.

If the light rail ever gets built from the city to Mirrabooka (via Fitzgerald St / Alexander Drive) it would make a lot of sense to (one day) have a branch that runs off Fitzgerald via Angove St / Scarborough Bch Rd through Mt Hawthorn, to Glendalough Station then onto Scarborough Beach.

Yes, digging up existing lines is mindless at the best of times but to have destroyed the Fremantle Line would have been criminal.

As it is, the politicians should have built a proper rail infrastructure 75 years ago before the suburbs built up. Now it is virtually impossible.

At some stage these guys will have to bite the bullet and plan an underground network. It's being done in places you wouldn't expect so no reason why we can't build one also.

gotta agree. as a Liberal voter I'm impressed with the design and think it's much better than what Humpwell came up with. The Libs need to take off the tunnel vision glasses and actually embrace a concept which is better than theirs. My only concern is funding it but if we can afford the Perth Gateway, Betty's Jetty, second desal plants, sports stadiums etc we can afford a decent public transport system.

What about if they built a line that branched off from Greenwood Station running down the existing space along Hepburn Ave and into Hillarys Marina - hooking up hopefully with a tramway along the beach?

pretty easy to come up with a better design when you dont have to budget for it..

La Hinch - there are buses that do exactly what you mentioned, no govt is going to spend money on something when a bus can do pretty much the same job for far less cost..

Might be an option.
Perhaps it would be much more cost effective to run buses down Hepburn Ave that hooks up with Greenwood Station.

Can't see the demand being as high in winter than summer.
