Is it ok to burn off garden debris in my backyard? Have a mountain of dead palm fronds I need to get rid off and finding any real time info outta my local council website is impossible. They only mention the do's & don'ts during total fire restriction periods. Can I assume that means it is ok to burn off outside of these restriction dates. City of Swan website states it is ok between 6-11pm as long as you inform neighbours, cause no direct hindrance to them or traffic re smoke etc,, that a hose/extinguisher is available to put out fire and that the fire doesn't exceed 1.3mtr in diameter with 5mtr clearance in all directions....a little scared to proceed due to the fine mentality of the nanny state we live in. Next green waste collection is 5months away and I really don't wanna fork out a couple of hundred in cash to dump the stuff at the tip, especially considering I'm in a new rental where these fronds have been collecting for the past 30yrs....wish these council websites would also list what is permissible rather than just describe the don'ts.....Anybody out there know?

anchorman has summed it up nicely. You could also look at your last Council rate notice, because any prohibited fire or restricted burning times would have been written in the little pamphlet supplied. If you are residing within irrigation land, burn off times are sooner than the balance of a shire.

DW perhaps contact your local Councillor or State MP.

New rental for me fish, not the property itself. I agree with you and have argued with property agent that it is a fire hazard but 4 months later and nothing has been done about it. According to the previous tenant debris has been lying at the base of the 2 trees and surrounds since that big blow we had in the middle of last winter. Conservatively it's around 4-5 trailer loads of debris. These fronds burn away easily and hoping we are getting some light rain later tonight so I can start burning off safely, bit by bit...won't risk a bonfire...got some kanga tail that is dying to see some hot coals anyway and have invited the neighbour over for a feed to keep him on side. Big night ahead....if the rain comes
