After the breakup was thinking what an amazing body of work was released by the main 3 songwriters immediately. Especially Harrison who didn't always get his songs onto Beatles albums. Although, he did make his point by providing the band with the last No 1 single (Something) and some would say the next best song (Here comes the sun) on Abbey Road.

These are the songs they wrote, recorded and released in 70 and 71.

Harrison: It Don't come easy (Written for Ringo), I'd Have you anytime (Harrison/Dylan), My Sweet Lord, Wah-Wah, Isn't it a pity Pt1, What is Life, Behind that locked door, Let it down, Run of the mill, Beware of darkness, Apple scruffs, Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp, Awaiting on you all, All things must pass, I dig love, Art of Dying, Isn't it a pity Pt2, Hear me Lord, Apple Jam 1, Apple Jam 2, Bangladesh, Deep Blue

Lennon: Instant Karma, Mother, Hold on, I found out, Working class hero, Isolation, Remember, Love, Well well well, Look at me, God, My mummy's dead, Imagine, Crippled inside, Jealous guy, It's so hard, I don't wanna, Gimme some truth, Oh my love, How do you sleep, How, Oh yoko, Power to the people, Xmas War is over

McCartney: The lovely Linda, That would be something, Valentine day, Every night, Hot as sun, Junk, Man we was lonely, Oo You, Momma miss america, Teddy boy, Singalong junk, Maybe I'm amazed, Kreen Akore, Another day, Oh woman oh why, Too many people, 3 legs, Ram on, Dear boy, Uncle Albert admiral halsey, Smile away, Heart of the country, Monkberry moon delight, Eat at home, Long haired lady, Ram on reprise, Back seat on my car

Hard to say which had the best songs. Depends on your taste I guess.

Unfortunately Harrison's "All things must pass" triple album has been removed from youtube. Sorry about that. All the songs are up there individually.

Paul McCartney - McCartney 1

Paul McCartney - Ram on

John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band

John Lennon - Imagine

Yes, I too was born in the late 70's. They certainly contributed as much to music as the Carter Family did. Things that can still be heard in music being produced today.

I remember in the 60's we were watching the Beatles on a show on TV with my Nan & Grandad. Nan was horrified at these horrible people with long hair knocking out a horrible sound.....disgusting...disgusting. Wonder what she'd think of the head banging shite nowadays  . Also, Mobil (I think) gave out A4 size glossy photos of the the group to their customers. I had 3 or 4 of them ...wish I still had them, they'd be worth a couple of dollars!!

I personally think that the Beatles were massively overrated as musicians, they were great at writing catchy pop tunes but a pop band can never compare to the genius of The Who, Led Zepplin and Hendrix.

Preparing for the backlash

Agree with you somewhat os. Their music was very much samo samo for the first few years. I think that at the time, the fan's emotion carried them forward. Their music matured over time and they did earn their stripes...no doubt. As for today, after 40 plus years, I'm over them.

Early Beatles stuff was average, later stuff before they broke up was thier best,Let it Be Album was a great album, way ahead of its time.[to me anyways]
Have collected Beatles stuff since i was youngish, cant afford autos unfortunately but have lots of other collectables hidden away. Will pass it all onto my sons when i kick the bucket.

I suppose they started to break the shackles from about Rubber Soul. Until then, their music was very chart driven.

But it was their sheer popularity that gave them the power to experiment and do what ever they felt like from 67 onwards and that also paved the way for other bands that followed.

All the Lennon and Harrison solo albums are fairly non-commercial sounding. Harrison's 79 self-titled album is superb apart from that ridiculous song dedicated to formula 1. "33 & 1/3" is good and so too "Extra Texture". Living in the material world is a bit of a test for some because it is fairly mellow and has a lot of references to spirituality. I still like it though. And "All things must pass" got to number 1 in 1970 and gave Lennon and McCartney something to think about.

But yeah "Harrison 79" is my favourite of his. Just skip past "Faster"
