Epis, as a youngster was a super star of the Goldfields National Footall league. In his first year he won the Fletcher medal for F&B player in the league and also won a premiership with the Mines Rovers FC,the Diorites.
Epis was takken by Essendon but had to sit our two years of football,1956 and 1957.due to a clearance dispute.
He was also inducted into the Goldfields Sporting hall of fame in 2010.
A dashing half back flanker for the Bombers he earned the nickname Kookaburra for his constant chatter.
Epis, when returning to Boulder to see his Mother, always trained with the Diorites and used to draw crowds to watch him train.I have stark memories of his carefully ironed shorts and training jumper. He looked immaculate when he ran out to train.
I was fortunate to know Alec as a kid as we lived only two streets away and he and my older brother were good friends.
He has dedicated his honour to the kids of the Goldfields who aspire to play at the elite level of football.
A good player and a good bloke.

Well, there aren't many bigger fans of Goldfields football than me, so respect to Alec Epis and long may the GFL produce wonderful players.

anchorman wrote: Are you a goldfields boy LA?
A lot of very very good players have come from the GFL.Some out and out champions.

No I'm not, I'm a wog boy mate from Perth. ...lol

But I became interested in Goldfields football in 2002 due to a disagreement with myself and the SFC...which has since been corrected thankfully.

I know quite a lot of the young blokes who have come through the GFL to Subi recently and they are rapt with how it's all set-up nowadays.

So, alls well that ends well.

anchorman wrote: It wasn't always that way La.I can remember one grand final night at the Diorites where Basil Fuller was refused entrance to our celebrations.I think it was the first year of the country zoning and the Goldfields were not happy having Subiaco as their WAFL club.
I also seem to remember that There was a bit of a kerfuffle over Dean Irving wanting to play for Souths but was bound to Subiaco.

Yes, absolutely mate. Subi needed to lift their game big time. It took a while but eventually they did. (Thank Christ)

The irony is...now...Subi are so pro Goldfields...and rightly so! I'm glad it got sorted in the mid to late 00's

Yep thank god for that LH. I see there are heaps of Kal boys in ressies and league but do we have any in colts at the moment ? Usually we have a handful but I think we're struggling on the colts front this year for Goldfields representation aren't we ???

Not as many this year as there will be next year or the previous year. The 1996 DOB wasn't that strong in development squad for Kal compared to 1995 or 1997 DOB. Of the 1996 Kal boys in the development squad, I only marked two (Sam Demarte/Anthony Champion) down as being in the best 25 for the club over the course of the carnival.

But nevertheless, we've got Sam Demarte (96), Ashton Williamson (97), Callum Bramley (97), Ryan Borchet (97) on board this year plus another couple like Tom Breeze (97) and Brandon Dowrick (97) who are likely to have a crack this year at some stage. Anthony Champion (96) was here but I think he struggled with city life a little bit.
