that is sport in a nutshell, our kids are generally "told" who they follow or barrack for. Or at least many just follow their dads automatically.

but the issue is the charades being displayed here in Australia. Having a mob type mentality with idiots walking down public streets sprouting banners and with blood coming from their foreheads, as was the case in Melbourne recently is just ludicrous.

I want someone to explain how this NEVER happens in AFL,NRL, NBL or BBL.
But it thrives in the A-League. Its got nothing to do with passion, it more to do with being pathetic.

Not sure about that, I have witnessed some big brawls at WAFL and VFL days, I remember a 1982 derby, there was a ,massive brawl on the hospital end hill at fremantle oval, i also remember brawls on the hill at subi, i went to melbourne in the 80s and saw a massive brawl after a collingwood v carlton game at the mcg.

I guess the difference is bazza that the WAFL/AFL brawls are very seldom hence you can remember incidents way back in the 80's. These soccer yo yo's are getting stuck in almost on a weekly basis which to me suggests there's something inherently wrong with the culture of the sport and those who follow it.

Racist, no. Its a cultural thing, and I think it is culturally acceptable around the world to be a tool at a soccer game. I'm sure there are Aussies there who are just as stupid.

I don't agree Mike. I'm sure it's not culturally acceptable in other countries. Only by the idiots of the world that just want a bit of 'bovver'.

Agree, with thagazillion of soccer games played every weekin major leagues, yes there are d***heads for sure, but perhaps not that many when against how many games are played.
Now without trying to start a debate, i wouldbe surprised if the afl matched the passion and devotion (no not the d***head ones)of soccer fans. Spain and argentina are 2 that come to mind.

When I was backpacking through Europe back in 2011 I went to a soccer game in Croatia between Split and Zagreb. Was told it would be worth going to because they are fierce rivals.

Get to the ground and its covered in Police armed with Sub Machine Guns. Had its own fenced off area just for opposition fans and the number of flares and black powder that was let off at the ground was unbelievable.

Luckily the game was a 0-0 draw because if Zagreb had won apparently it would have got ugly.

Im not sure it doesnt happen in NRL as well Jars as a few years ago one of those Western Sydney (Canterbury?) sides fans were found to be taking knives and other weapons to matches ..hmmm come to think of it could it be just a Western Sydney thing!!
