Why is Gerard Whateley so bitter? 10 years 7 months ago #30351

Can someone please explain why Gerard Whateley is so bitter and twisted towards the Dockers? Is it because not only did the Dockers defeat Geelong down at Geelong; they also ensure that there would never be another final down at Geelong?

Why was he so underwhelmed by the GF? Why was he so dismissive of the Dockers when they gcut the lead back to 3 points? Why was he so indignant that Lake gets 4 (down to 3) weeks for an action which was reprehensible and could have resulted in Walters receiving a broken jaw or cheekbone? Why was he not as indignant that the umpire did not give Walters a 50 metre penalty when LAke had to take a minimmum of two steps to contact Walters and hence was not in the marking contest? Further not only was he late with the contact he raised his elbow as part of the late contact.

The other possibility is although he espouses the virtues of impartiality; the reality is as Victorian-centric as the vast majority of the Victorian media.

To further demonstrate his anti-Dockers' bias why didn't he wax lyrically on his Fox Footy programme, AFL360, the respect shown by the Dockers to Sydney Swan's Bolton?

i am a football purist in general. a roo's fan living in WA so im in the minority here but thats no worry.
What I dont get is the general endless defensive fremantle speel about them being so hard done by across the board. every little negative comment by anybody in the media, or in the street for that matter, starts a barrage of anger. i dont see this in any other team in the AFL, i really dont. not to this extent anyway. Not every decision in a game will go your way, not every media analysis will be in your favour.

why do freo people care if Gerard Whately likes or dislikes them? I dont get this one at all. Caroline wilson hates north with a passion, but we dont care less.

i dont see this "anti-freo" paranoia at every turn. i have always felt this attitude since day one at fremantle has always held them back. they seem constantly worried about perception and demanding respect without earning it. they may not have won a flag, but they have earned a general respect by making a grand final at least . freo is a club who that has lifted in all areas since the error riddled days of the past. that is history, so start moving on from that and for heavens sake stop whinging at every opportunity about everything. freo have plenty of positives so just ride with that and stop the complexes.

for the record, the Lake non 50 metre penalty was obviously wrong. But i am sure Walters kicked the goal anyway, so why bother re-visiting it?

I didn't really know whatley had any chip with freo oh well im only relaying the take. the missed shots were put to him by caroline wilson, he said he didnt buy it an went through all of Lyons GF sides and scores, they were all consistantly small, Hawthorn missed shots as well of course.

freo did get back within 3 points they had a 15 minute passage, but never hit the lead in the entire match..in 10 minutes of power footy by the hawks it was soon blown out to 30, at that point the game was iced.

your right 3 points is a contest but means nothing I guess if you dont go on with it.

yeah on seeing it again - the Suban incident was a face pinch certainly some strange wandering fingers there...been referred to Tribunal ..what the hell was he thinking?? pinching , hair pulling all starting to become a freo trait.

anyway its all ancient history now, the highlights - were there any? probably the worst GF in years - seen better skills in Wogan Hills.

i enjoyed the WAFL GF a lot better, kicks in the rain from 50 out - straight through, far better value..at $20 and a train ride.

To think 20,000 or so (more than attended the WAFL GF) WA people forked out huge amounts like $2500 to fly to melbourne and $300 for a ticket to watch that garbage, when they couldnt even bother turning up to a WAFL GF played up the road for a few bucks is a pretty sad indictement on the footy going public here.

I don't know Swan, your telling the story? maybe it's just in your head.

Wouldn't surprise me Bazza if Sammy had a good grip himself on a part of Suban. Might explain it. Tit for tat maybe.

Thanks Bazza for confirming my suspicions. Was there a substantial difference in the inside 50s for Hawthorn compared to Fremantle? Conservatively Freo kicked at least 4 to 6 out of bounds on the full with shots at goal and probably an equal number of points as kicks out of bounds. Hypothetically if half of those shots at goals were successful, then the Freo scoreline would look as though they had an attacking mindset. But why let that get in the way of a good story.

To reiterate it would be expecting too much to have a reasonable precis of Freo's year from the likes of Whateley et al.
