Below is a list of 1st tier football premierships taken from the AFL which was formaly the VFL, the WAFL and the SANFL.
All 3 Leagues known to be the three major state league comps for a majority of their history.

The table below shows 1st Tier Premierships for WAFL clubs up to the year 1986.
Sanfl Clubs up to the year 1990 when the Crows came in.
VFL clubs and AFL clubs as they are,

Interesting that 10 AFL clubs are in the bottom 18 of this list yet are in the AFL?

Just also shows you how wrong the formation of the AFL was back in 1987. They did this so the wrong way. We are now seeing the reasons why it should never of been formed as it was.

Team 1st tier
Port Adelaide 30
Norwood 26
East Fremantle 26
Carlton 16
Essendon 16
West Perth 15
Collingwood 15
East Perth 14
North Adelaide 12
Sturt 12
Melbourne 12
South Adelaide 11
South Fremantle 10
Hawthorn 10
Richmond 10
Geelong 9
West Adelaide 8

GWS, bloody interesting post. Are you saying the Port Adelaide strategy was the way to go? Was in the bush in the mid eighties when East Fremantle put a consortium together. Could the posters fill me in on the history of this and how close it was to gaining entry to the VFL? Also what stopped it?

Nice post. I hated the brownlow last night listening to all those former vfl winners of the award. Watched it because i was on call at my job and had to stay sober.

The award should be a new one representing the AFL.

Not another $ to struggling vic clubs except Melbourne.

WC to change their name to Perth.

14 team comp with each club playing the other 13 teams twice (once at each others home deck) for a 26 round comp and no pre season.

National comp.
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

It was actually East Perth that put up the application Devonleigh, in October 1980. It was rejected without comment by the VFL. See attached link for more information.

It was more to highlight Bazza that the national comp should never of been formed out of the VFL. The formation of the VFL becoming what we have now has a lot to do with the weak people at the WAFL and the SANFL who should of been tougher and protected their traditional clubs and demanded a pathway ina national comp for them to be a part of it.
As the VFL morphed into the national comp it destroyed all other football comps in the country. If we had started the National comp from scratch we could of had 2 divisions with relegation and promotion and football arguably would be in a better place. To late now I know.
But very clear that the best clubs in Australia are not in the AFL.

Cheers BC, good banter is what these forums are about. Was great to see the Falcons win and had a great day. No matter what level when your side wins as you know they are always special.
Keep punching mate.

Mate it was and is all about preserving the VFL, and the power clubs in it. It has never had anything to do with looking after WAFL SANFL clubs, all the quids are largely funnelled into old VFL clubs.

Many new generation WA and SA people are now supporting none WA based teams as well which is interesting.
