We all know womens football (Aussie rules that is) has been given an armchair ride by the AFL that other womens sports could only dream about. Instant live coverage on free to air and Foxtel, mens AFL commentary and free admission or a token entry fee just to get a few thousand bums on seats. 

We’ve seen them gradually demand more this more that. What I’ve always been of the opinion of is the game is too rough for them and they seem to get injured more easily. I don’t have a problem with women playing the game but I think it should be modified to suit their gender. The fact of life is women are built less masculine to men. That’s not being a bigot that’s just a fact of life.

As a result these women are now going to hijack the game by hiring a law firm to sue the AFL for 1 billion dollars for women who have suffered long lasting injuries as a result of concussion for playing the game they demanded to play.

Seriously you cannot make this shit up. Now I’m not woman bashing here, women are great athletes and deserve the right as much as anyone to pursue a professional career in sport and they are great at what they do and in some respects do it better than the men. Look at our womens cricket team, the best in the world and ultra consistent.

Our female swimmers are the best in the world and win way more medals than our men but Aussie Rules is a man’s game and a tough sport I believe not designed for women hence they don’t execute it in a way that is not even close to resembling the mens game but when you watch women’s cricket they are as skilful as the men just without the same power and speed. Very watchable.

AFLW better be very careful where they are heading, they might be making a rod for their own back because the AFL if they’ve got any balls, and we know they don’t, should be seeking medical and scientific studies to determine whether our sport should be played by women and young girls under the same rules and conditions as the men because I firmly believe the outcome would be absolutely not. 

It’s my opinion women’s AFL should basically be modified rules aimed at avoiding full contact or heavy collisions. Perhaps something like AFLX that was experimented with a few years ago which was basically what we love to call bruise free football but was still entertaining played on smaller rectangular soccer/rugby sized playing fields. Women just have to accept Australian Rules football is not suitable for women and girls to play under the same rules as the men. 

I am huge fan of women's sport, watching Netball Hockey Soccer are Commonwealth Games/ Olympic highlights for me.

I have zero interest in the AFLW and am outraged by the huge resources pumped into it when already existing community sport is stuffed financially. Then there is out of proportion media coverage it gets when state based mens leagues get next to nothing despite being a vastly better product.

But I agree Australian Rules is totally unsuited to Women, the physical demands and type of game it is means that the product produced is very poor, perhaps as DD suggests the modified version. Whatever they do with it Ill be sticking to the traditional womens sports.

There’s plenty of scientific evidence that proves that women are 2-8 times more likely to do an ACL injury than men across a large variety of 360 degree sports, not just Australian Rules. 

If you compared the standard of men’s football at State League level less than 10 years after it began to todays standards then you’d make the same comment that the standard in comparison is very poor. Trying to compare women’s footy in its formative years to full time professional men’s football is ridiculous. 

Women’s sport isn’t men’s sport. Women golfers shouldn’t be compared to men’s, neither should you compare women’s tennis, soccer, cricket, basketball, athletics, swimming to their male counterparts. Enjoy the differences that women bring to the sport or don’t watch it - none of the female athletes care what you think or if you want to watch them participate in their sport of choice. As the biggest growth in sport in Australia they’re not seeking permission from a couple of old blokes who are stuck in the 60s with their views, to go enjoy playing football.

Ignorance is bliss TT but I welcome a difference of opinion. Women have breasts and smaller hands and feet than men. You can't tell me women marking a rock hard inflated leather footy on their chest is good for their breasts. Is that going to be their next billion dollar claim against the AFL? Breast cancer?

They should be using either a smaller footy that juniors use or the thinner lighter old Chesson Coke a Cola footy that league players used to kick into the crowd at big games.

As Bazza and I have pointed out, women's skill level in other sports is of a high standard and very watchable. Comparable to the men just with a bit less power and speed. The skill level of  women's AFL is more comparable to much lower level junior footy. Needs to be commonsense instead of it being about women's rights and equality for women.

Won't be long they'll be demanding the same match payments as men, hang on are they already doing that or heading in that direction?

Would it be considered politically incorrect if a AFLW commentator described the recipient of a worm burning pass, as ''being hit on the tit''from an impeccable pass??

What a bizarre comment comparing Mens Australia Rules less than ten years after it started to now, man that would have been about 1880 to now? With the Gazzilions getting poured into this crap in the modern era one would have thought they would produce a product slightly more exciting than the crap dished out at this year's so called GF. And btw its been floating around as a game for women for a lot longer than 10 years. 

Tbh I have my doubts it will survive in its current format longer than me, and I know for a fact without massive subsidies it certainly wont. 

As for not caring who watches them Sam Kerr made the right choice with Soccer, a world wide household name compared to bunch of nobodies playing this mickey mouse stuff, they care alright the look at me stuff is legion.

Your suggestion that they use a smaller sized footy and adopt different rules to the men’s game demonstrates your ignorance about the women's footy. 

Senior Womens competition play with a Size 4 football which is the same size used by Yr 8 to Ur 10 boys. The quarter lengths have also been shortened when compared to men’s competitions with less games in a season. AFLW only has 16 players on the field, not 18. 

In regard to your concerns about their breasts, you’ll be relieved to know that breast protection apparel for combat and full contact sports has been around for a long time. 

Bazza, there’s plenty of big subsidies keeping competitions and clubs afloat - the WAFL and every club within it for example. 

Did Sam Kerr pick soccer over Australian Rules or was soccer the option she had most available to her to participate in? Is Womens soccer subsidised in England by the men’s game or is it fully self funded with TV rights, sponsorship and match attendance? 



 

I'll say right off the bat I have no beef with women playing footy, go for your life. Love women, my mum's one and my sister is too, at least at the moment. 

But I love to follow the money - and why it goes where it does. If the AFL was genuine in building a decent AFLW women's comp they'd have poured money into grassroots girls footy for five years and built a national pool of talent first instead of poaching players from other sports and producing a circus of U12s standard footy, at least initially. And not paying them decently. That's not a semi-pro game. It's getting there. But its been a rough and average start.

God forbid a male player sustains an injury to the groin and litigates the AFL.... Maybe they will blame it on his huge nuts or small hands..
