When Zimbabwe won the gold medal in the women's hockey at the 1980 Olympics were there any countries that boycotted that event who had previously qualified?  Is that the explanation for why Zimbabwe participated in the event in the first place?

At least with the boycotts of Moscow in 1980 it saved our men's hockey team from yet another choke on the big stage!

Our game might well be broadcast internationally but the only country that would actively watch it might be Ireland and the expats elsewhere - it isn't a popular sport outside of Oz that's for sure
Money that could be better spent on grassroot level I reckon

Yes with 7 Golds, they did appear to be up and about in the track and field, in saying that they seem to have a good share of ring ins.

The US had one of its poorest games on the track.

yes they defeated spain for gold in the hockey.

Turned out there were only 5 teams in the comp after a heap pulled out, which was one of the reasons Rhodesia scored a medal, on second thoughts maybe the Kookas should of turned up might of had a good chance of a Gold, but then again....
