I strongly support marking the arrival of the First Fleet in some way as it is the pivotal moment that created the Australia we have today,

Cook, Phillip, Flinders, are all national heros and deserve celebration.

It wasnt that long ago that being the direct decendant of a First Fleeter and a Convict as a cause of great celebration and was spoken about widely on Oz Day, now all we get is another version of Naidoc Day week or whatever it is, a heap of Indigenous stuff that really has no bearing on what built modern Australia.

I went to a local ceremony and after the welcome to country , the smoking ceremony the last straw for me was having to stand and basically salute as the Aboriginal Flag was raised at the same level as the Australian Flag, what country does that?

It has got so hand wringing and politically driven that the day is not even worth having, anyone who actually thinks changing it will end the moaning is deluded, noisy wheels get the most noise, and any parent knows that rewarded the screaming kid is one step away from the next concession on bad behaviour.

Fact is the Aboriginal lobby and left arent actually against the date, they are against Australia celebrating Nationalism

You can already seen ANZAC Day is next on the hit list.

Multi Cultural-ism and the left wing agitators have ensured that unity is an impossible dream, its not going to happen. We are more divided than ever as a nation of tribes.

Anyway Im at the point at just pissing the whole thing off, and just give us an extra day off at Xmas. I feel more for WA than I do for the concept of Australia anyway.

Or at the very least - just go back to how it was before Keating stuffed it up in the 90s and moved the public holiday to the actual 26th, just make it the last Monday in Jan, give everyone the day off and go back to having nothing political on the day, no ceremonies, no awards non of the BS, just let people have the day off and go to the beach how it was in the 70s.

If you dont like Australia Day, dont bloody celebrate it or recognise it, but the majority do like to celebrate it so should be allowed to in a so called free country, not be made to feel guilty by the loud self important minorities who always seem to think they own the moral high ground.

What is it you don't like about Australia Day?

The biggest irony is Cricket is an English game brought here wholey and soley because of the first fleet, the first game of cricket was probably played with Sailors Marines and Convicts.

It does smack of arrogance on our part and no recognition of the fact there were others here before us. I think the date is the problem not the celebration as such. Move the date and it all goes away.

The protestors cant even get that right, the First Fleet arrived on 18 Jan, at Botany Bay, they moved to Sydney Cove on the 26th and the Proclamation wasn't even made until the 28th.

The ideal day would of been Federation Day , that is the day Australia as a nation actually came into existence before that it simply did not exist.

Canada celebrates the same event on 1 July.

Unfortunately some genius decided to do it on New Years Day, as a result it was never really seriously considered as a National Day, marking the day when everyone pre occupied with the festive season would never work, plus it means losing a public holiday, good luck with that.

Remember the huge celebrations for the centenary of federation in 2001, neither do I.

But wow wasnt 1988 a great party.

Nothing Bazz I'm with you on this, just saying, those who don't like the idea are free to not celebrate it, those that do like it should be free to celebrate it without the PC/cancel culture fundamentalist fanatics doing their best to make everyone feel guilty about everything.

Recognise the terrible shit that happened to the First peoples, but that was done by other generations, not by me or my generation, eg I don't hold the current generation of Japanese responsible for the horrific war crimes of their past generations, but recognise what did occur.

Ever notice the protestors never once have an Australian Flag? its all the Aboriginal Flag, so much for reconciliation, yet a lot of official functions now are being forced to fly both - Its all one way traffic as usual.
