If you did something, such as the above, we would actually have an elite league, where each side would play each other three times.

AR you are on the right track here.
I mean seriously how can you have a supposed "elite national comp" with inept VFL teams like NM, STK, Foots, Melb etc in it?
Every year they rely on handouts from the afl just to survive and contribute little really but are subsidised a lot.

There are WAFL, SANFL & TFL clubs that have as much or more right to be in a proper national league than those continual bloodsuckers!

If they were to have a proper AFL start up from scratch and not the current abomination vfl+ then the team breakdown by state should be imho-

VIC- 4
WA- 1
SA- 1
TAS- 1
QLD- 1
NSW- 1
ACT- 1
NT- 1

20 games played 10 at home & 10 away with a Top 5 finals.
Each state would continue to have its own professional state league- WAFL, SANFL, VFL, TFL etc.
A proper National competition and not the VIC centric wankfest that is really all it is currently!

I find this claim quite surprising and slightly misleading BH. The AFL distributes cash to all the clubs. In 2019 the clubs shared a base of $198 million equally among themselves. a further $71. 5 million was then split variably. Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Giants received considerably more than St.Kilda, Footscay, North Melbourne and Melbourne. But they bring a lot more to the AFL with their history, traditions and solid support bases - all have more than 40 k in members. To ditch them would be rather desultory if you ask me. There seems little point in the 4 Victorian club splitting from the other 7. From there perspective it would seem sticking together would be better and piss the rest off and keep Sydney/South Melbourne. Let the Johnny come latelys play each other and see how well that works out

Over the last 5 seasons the most INEPT clubs would be Gold Coast & FREMANTLE. North have won 20% more times, Melb 33% more, Dogs a Flag & Saints 29% more. Freo were set up by Mark Harvey only to be milked by Ross Lyon. Relocate Freo to Darwin & this will improve the competition of bludgers. All Freo have done is draft mainly dickheads.
If you dont like this then follow the WAFL read the bottom of the ladder each week.

BH: needless to say I agree with every word

LS where does this come from? How many flags have St kilda. Melb., Footscray and even, Collingwood won since 60? Most of those clubs have taken subsidies since 87, largely from here and SA, as you would know. Fremantle should never have been formed, but, again, they are unsubsidised, and unlike the eagles, were no formed out of a state side, or, given preference in the draft to give them a kick start. Can you say the same about the clubs north of victoria?

TE well then essentially all you have is the vfl+ as it is currently, lets not kid ourselves that is all it is and forever will be until they cut the crap so to speak!
As I posted earlier those piss weak VIC clubs like NM, StK, Foots, Melb etc would still play in their state league VFL but should be nowhere near a proper elite National Competition they have no right to be other than they where old vfl clubs, perennial losers and broke but vfl clubs all the same.
As for the dollars generated the TV monies would be the biggest by far in that comp ($2.75 billion was the last TV deal) and the NSW/QLD sides play a huge part in generating that figure as believe it or not those 2 states alone have approx 55% of Australia's population with the advertising (as that is what pays for those deals) opportunities and the extra audience/ratings into those markets.
Without those 2 key essential markets and the massive extra dollars they bring you would go back to the pre 1987 TV deals which were barely worth a cold pie and a can of coke for the broke ol VFL!

AFL TV Audiences in Melbourne are about 4 times the size of Sydney and Brisbane combined. Not suggesting Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane are states but does give an indication that NSW and QLD provide bugger all to the AFL TV audience - so not sure how you arrived at the conclusion they are essential to the TV deal figure. Surely Victoria is driving that along with WA and SA.

I remember hearing some tv ratings about a Gws game (who were near the top of the ladder) up against a nrl game and it was something like 20 thousand viewers compared to 200 thousand viewers. Gws and gold coast are a massive waste of massive money

Well the Tiges go back to back, Geelong wasted their 1st half dominance and Richmond turned on a show in the 2nd half.....yep Dusty wins a 3rd NS medal, probably warranted this time.

Great individual efforts by all the WA boys playing.

Pickett - turned it over a bit initially, but rectified that after half time like the good player he is, tackled like a demon throughout.

Baker - great run through the lines for Richmond. Busy all night.

McIntosh - looked lively when in possession and defensive pressure was good.

Broad - gutsy effort after a hard knock early on, shut down both Danger and Ablett at times.

Bolton - x factor for sure, always dangerous, Bolton and Charlie Cameron are the best two small forwards going around at the moment. Exciting to watch with ball in hand.

Menagola - kicked a couple, great courageous mark and did his bit around the ground.

Duncan - NS material at half time, died off a bit in the 2nd half but hey didn't most of the Geelong boys.

Taylor - kept Lynch to one late goal in a losing side, waddles around like a duck, but geez does he do his lock down job well. Kept Dixon, Cox, Hipwood and Lynch to a goal a piece during this finals series, definitely cooked at the AFL level, but did well for an old fella at this level.

Anyone else think Dangerfield's elbow had intent. I know he initially fended off the ball but he then adjusted slightly and gave another jab with it i reckon. It put him off his game for sure
Victorians still laugh at West Aussies because of the way we bailed out the vfl and then allowed it to be called it the AFL!

At the 20 minute mark of the second quarter Geelong were in front 35 to 13, so from that moment on Richmond scored 68 to the Cats 15, a total obliteration. Even though the scores were still almost level at 3 quarter time, it appeared inevitable that Richmond were going to run away with it in the last team. They had a bit of a wobble when they lost Vlaustein but once they had reorganised their defence the Tigers quickly got back on track. Dusty was on another level compared with the other 41 players and all his goals came at crucial moments. I felt sorry for Gaz who bravely came back after the shoulder injury but had zero impact on the game. All of Geelongs stars apart from Selwood were pretty well blanketed.
No reason why the Tigers can't do a three- peat next year whereas I think the Cats may be looking at a partial rebuild as they were the oldest team to play a Grand Final for quite a few years.

As for the entertainment and the spectacle I thought it was all a bit ordinary and it didn't really feel like a grand final.
