Very disappointing for a champion like Adam Goodes to be racially abused by a spectator at the end of the game last night. It was very sad to see Adam walk off the ground too upset to celebrate the win with his mates. Racial vilification is different from any other abuse, particularly when is directed at Aboriginal people, who have been the subject of historic discriminatory Government policies and often abuse and bullying at school, which Goodes articulated this morning in his press conference.
Having said all that I think the response to the situation has been excellent. Firstly from Adam himself, talking honestly about the impact that the abuse had on him, but also stressing that the 13 year old girl needed to be protected and most importantly educated.
I'm not a fan of Eddie, but he was brilliant I reckon the way he handled the situation by going straight into the Swans rooms after the game. The whole Collingwood club in their response to it. Apparently also the girl has talked to Adam on the phone and apologised.
I think there is a real opportunity to get some positives out of this situation, not unlike the Nicky Winmar stand 20 years. Education for footy supporters about where the line is as far as abuse is concerned
