Seems a big announcement is to be made in Geelong today - Ford to pull out of Australia. This would obviously mean the end of the iconic Ford Falcon.

What will this mean for Ford v Holden at Bathurst? The death of another Australian sporting institution?

Will the cats be looking for a new sponsor?

Mike.

Yeah i believe the cats ford sponsorship is one of the oldest if not the oldest in the world. I would hope it continues,as many clubs are sponsored by large overseas companies anyway.

UNKA2 perhaps Wimbledon's arrangement with Slazenger balls might pre-date Geelong's and Ford's arrangement.

Good riddance!

Every Ford executive from Detroit to Shanghai to Geelong should be lined up and shot. This fraud of a company has perpetuated one of the greatest heists in corporate history blackmailing successive governments worldwide into paying millions in taxpayers money to prop up their failed business model. They’ve been doing it here since the 1980s. I mean what other business gets paid to make products no one wants? It’s a disgrace that governments have allowed these pirates to get away with it for so long. End all business subsidies and make it a true free market for once without pirate capitalists, rent seekers and accountant spivs continually conspiring to get their hands on taxpayers money.

Governments pour money into companies such as GM and Ford locally as these companies have immense amount of manufacturing production capacity and engineering knowledge.

During war times, these two companies have produced everything from artillery, landing barges to aircraft.

Pouring money in to these industries is (or used to be) cheap investment as far as keeping manufacturing plants at the governments wartime disposal.

The cost of designing a car has become expensive. I'm not sure how much the original Holden would have cost to get to production, however the 1988 VN Commodore which is considered to be one of the most significant models since the original was done at a cost of around $10,000,000

The Current VE Commodore cost Holden $1,000,000,000 to get into production.

It tends to put it into prospective.

Out of interest GM sold 485,650 HQ Holden's between 1971 and 1974. This was surpassed by the VE Commodore at around 520,000 since 2006 - now the longest running model ever.

It's not a case of no more Fords, it's no more Australian built Fords, as far as racing goes you might see the return of the Ford Mustang to our race tracks like the old days, or they could all go away from the V8 platform and start racing the turbo Cosworth powered Ford Focus that is the replacement to the Ford Cosworth Sierra(remember those?), those are kick a$$ cars built for racing. Make no mistake the Ford V Holden(GM) will continue..

You will find Ford will sell a greater range of cars sourced from all over the world, sad thing is that building cars in Australia has become to expensive....that is a huge worry!!

Yep agree mate, although its sad to see the end of an Aussie icon in the falcon. This was bound to happen . They took 100 million tax payers dollars less than a year ago and now pull the pin, they have taken the government for a ride for 20 yrs , in 1975 ford made 500 000 cars a year in Australia , now they make less than 200000 , sales of the falcon have collapsed , it's a lemon, if you take fleet sales to taxis and the cops out they would stuff all sales.

Holden and Toyota are bound to go as well, our labour costs are massive, that with the carbon tax and a small local market means it will all end in tears,
