An interesting analysis here of how hard AFL is to present on TV (compared to say eg, soccer, rugby, gridiron, netball), and how the production hasn't really changed in the last 40 - 50 years, even though the game is played completely differently.

Jack, some interesting points in there, i think the proliferation of close-ups of players and play is a real negative, TV should be looking at more medium and long range shots, a bit closer to what the punters in the stands and outer see. You can see the set up, where the space is, who is doing the long leads etc.

Fascinating article. And the tv stations are about to pay for their lack of investment in broadcasting outside of Victoria. Games being called off monitors in Melbourne when they could have been broadcast from Perth, Adelaide, etc. if they bothered to give opportunities to decent broadcasters outside of Victoria

Interesting week for the AFL and tv broadcasts.ESPN for the first time in over a decade are televising live AFL.Into the North American market. Not sure Sydney V Richmond would be deemed the game of the week. Maby Gws v Port or Skt v Freo would of been better games to show.2 good young teams.

I recall when I first subscribed to Foxtel, I think it was around 2007/08 and they had a STADIUM viewing option which basically meant you could see the whole ground as though you were sitting high up in the grandstand.

I think they had another option as well, I think it might have been behind the goals. So fast forward to 2020 and I've still got Foxtel and no longer have that option.

Good Article.

That 1958 VFL footage is actually decent quality.

It seems to me the camera angle thing peaked in the early 2000, when they had a lot more behing the goals camera shots. Foxtel had a choice of camera as well ..the novelty must of worn off or something , cannot say I used them much.

Anyone remember when Ch 7 had either a Helicopter or a Blimp and at one stage a huge crane with a camera over Subi Oval for finals.
