That changed due to the outrageous salaries being forked out by clubs like North Melbourne , Carlton , Collingwood , Richmond , Hawthorn , Essendon & St Kilda

The VICs raped all of us in the 70s & especially the 80s mate not just WA & SA including-

QLD (Dunstall, Lawrence, McIvor, Crosisca etc)
NSW (Daniher's, Carey, Longmire, Brownless etc)
TAS (Lynch, Roach, Pritchard, Eade etc)
ACT (Jesaulenko, Hird, Conlan, Allison etc)
NT (Rioli, Long, McLean, Buckley etc)

Graham Cornes was a bit of a hypocrite in the end - a few SA blokes let him know that after he bent over & took coin from North Melbourne for a guest season in the early 1980's
That was around the time even Russell Ebert went to North for a year for ludicrous bucks
