This thread refers to my remarks about the escort cup that year. Below is the SD premiership side

www.waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=6469

I think they could have beaten the RFC with a big effort from the following in the ruck:

Sartori
Sidebottom
Boucher

both sides possessed classy mid fields, but I think SD could have worn down Mar Lee in the ruck and won the game. I must say, I have actually forgotten the ease with which SD won that flag in 1982. Had they kicked straight the scoreboard would have looked ugly indeed for the Tigers.

Well done Ark another great topic.
From memory they beat a team from the Sanfl in there first match preseason. Glenelg in Adelaide. Beat Collingwood by 9 points at Waverley Park. Then where up against Melbourne who where bottom of the VFL ladder. That would of put Swans in the last 4 teams.Like North Adelaide did in 1987+88.So did East Perth 1979-Claremont 1980.
The VFL changed the fixtures and gave SD V Richmond. So John Todd sent the reserves side over to play the Tiger's.
Swans V Richmond mid season on a wet Dewey Waverley night.I'm not sure about that.Think that side would of beat Richmond at Subiaco Oval in a day game in 1982.
Remember back to that era Ark.Claremont where a better side on paper than Swans.Toddy just got his players up for the big games.

gtr: thanks mate: I forgot about the weather; I think you might be being a little hard on your beloved 82 side; I think they were better than Cl and showed it clearly in the two finals, second semi as well as the gf. In 1983 and 1984, there is no doubt that the club did a great job winning both flags against the opposition of the day.

Just for people's reference here is the RFC side from the 1982 VFL grand final:

GTR I would agree about Claremont in 1981 being better than us when they had the mercurial Krakouer brothers but after they left for NM I think we had their measure especially in the big games as AR posted.

Just thinking about there mids+fwd line BH.The mids adding there wingman where 5 by 30 posessions a game.And the 3 power fwds 100+ 80 + and 65+.Ralph,Stavros+Farmer.

True ArkRoyal, but the ease of Swans' GF win belies that Claremont went into the finals as favourites after they towled SD at Bassendean in the second last round. SD's second semi final win was an upset.

SH -- thanks for your post mate: the tigers certainly beat SD in the game you mentioned, but one needs to be a bit careful making too much out of it. SD had cl coverred and would have won the game by half-time had they kicked straight. In the second semi and the gf the black and whites showed no mercy to cl. For example, cl's score at three quarter time in the grand final, even today, ranks as one of the lowest tallies for that stat in the history of WAFL. Imagine what the scoreboard would have looked like if we turned around the 14.26 kicked in the second semi to 26.14.

All: The only way you could try and insist that SD were not the better side on paper and on the ground, in 1982, is if, as some do, you place too much emphasis on Warren Ralph, in every other position SD had equal or better players.

All that is true ArkRoyal, especially the comment about Ralph. Swans going into the 1982 final round were considered brittle under pressure – which seems remarkable after what they eventually achieved. They had lost four of their previous five finals – six from seven if you include the disaster of '75 – the ghost of which still haunted the club, and we'd gone out in straight sets in 1981. This is obviously a matter of opinion, but what Swans did in the finals of 1982 had not been seen in the season up to that point. They threw caution to the wind in the second semi and Todd certainly surprised Moss when Solin started on Ralph instead of the forecast Kenny who was instead shifted forward and ran riot. Solin and Skwirowski were equal BOG in my opinion that day – the run off game Solin played on Ralph exposed Ralph’s (possibly one) weakness of being an average defensive forward, while Skwirowski, well, it would not surprise me if Malaxos today at the club has uncontrollable shaking fits when he walks past the 1982 premiership photo with Bill’s image in it.

Let’s just say that personally I felt more confident of winning the flag from third in 1983 than second in 1982.

Yeah true mate the "Golden Triangle" combined for nearly 300 goals between them in 81 and then add in the Krakouers resting up forward as well no wonder the Tigers kicked a record amount that year.
Although Farmer's output diminished somewhat in 82 & 83 (hence he moved to us for a short stint in 84 and then to Perth in 85/86) and Stav (Arthur Marshall used to call him Zorba) had successfully moved into the Centre in 83, Ralph never really dominated too much against us with a massive bag despite the class of the Claremont midfield feeding him as whether it be Mullooly, Solin or Kenny always played him tight and close and then ran off him when the opportunity came.

I'm pretty sure Toddy always had a plan V Ralph.Swans defenders use to sledge him and put him off his game.On field sledging and tagging where first used in Australian football by Toddy at Swans.
