According to The West looks like he's facing a lifetime ban from racetracks after doing something absolutely bizarre throwing two shoes at the field at the bell at Gloucester Park tonight. Champion reinsman Chris Lewis said he's never seen anything like it. Apparently Palmer was there with other SD team mates. Sounds like alcohol a major factor. Silly boy. Police were called. Surely the club will have to discipline him.

The race was a $50,000 3yr old colts and geldings Sales Classic and he could have brought down the whole field. A race like that was probably the best 3yr olds in the state.

Just unbelieveable, from a supposed leader of the club. If this is as bad as portrayed which is that he endangered the horses and riders, he may well face criminal charges. I will not be sorry if the club give him the flick over this TBH. If it was a young guy you might counsel him and give him a 2nd chance. Alcohol is no excuse.

Well said Mike, I'm obviously no SD supporter but I think you have nailed it. What was he thinking? No doubt would have been tested for both drugs and alcohol. The club will probably say it was out of character for him and sanction him and dump him from the leadership group. They would have no other choice. And agree if the allegations are true he will face criminal charges. Something along the lines of endangering lives and welfare of reinsmen and the horses.

Everyone knew he was of poor character and that’s why no other club wanted him. The rhetoric from the club was that he’s now a great leader and example for our younger players. Really?

And they are now trotting out the same lines for other players that nobody wants.

The club has issued the following statement this morning

The Swan Districts Football Club confirm there was an incident involving its players at Gloucester Park last night.

“The first and utmost concern of the club at this point in time is the health and safety of all involved. This includes the participants and spectators at WA Harness Racing and our players”, said club Chief Executive Jeff Dennis.

“The club is in the process of confirming what has occurred. It’s important that any decisions taken by the club are informed by facts”.

The club will be undertaking a thorough investigation of the matter in the coming week.

Any outcomes will reflect the club’s values. Everyone at Swan Districts Football Club, including the players understand how important these are to the club.

The club won’t be making any further comment at this point in time.

For those who are not aware the club values as articulated in a policy document on their website are
1. Integrity - doing the right thing, accepting responsibility if things go wrong, how do actions reflect on club,family and self
2. Everyone Matters- do my actions show that I care for others
3. Raise the bar- empowering people to be the best they can be
4. We fly together - do I go out of my way to help others.

Palmer is entitled to natural justice in the investigation and has the right to give his side of the story but if what was reported in the press is accurate, Palmer has totally undermined these club values and in my view his position in the club is therefore untenable.

It's been reported that Palmer threw one shoe and an 18 yr old SD player threw the other shoe after a fight broke out in the general admission area on the grass.

The club really has to take a stand on this DD. Otherwise those values are not worth the piece of paper they are written on. What sort of example is this for a Senior player at the club to be setting?

Yep obviously mike the club needs to gather the facts and wait for the police report but the good thing (not always a good thing) is there is probably several people who have filmed the whole thing on their phones. Did you see the short video clip? The race caller said someone has thrown a shoe onto the track, can security please get this man away from the track.

I'd say Mike, Palmers WAFL career is probably over can you imagine the fun the opposition players and spectators will have with him? As for the 18 yr old he deserves a second chance. As yet unnamed.

On a light hearted note someone tweeted "Rhys Palmer still can't hit a target". Lol, but in reality this is a serious incident.
