2 simple things that make all the difference.
1. The AFL and the 18 clubs are first and foremost a business, not a football club.
2. Perceptions is reality. Why would a club pick up a kid who by all reports is perceived to be a risk to their brand that may put sponsorship, marketing, memberships at risk.

The AFL and it's clubs are masters of sweeping matters under the rug, the media are also in their back pocket. If you are a proven elite player of the AFL you can get away with almost anything!
