Mark, if they felt adjusting Garlett's behaviour was so simple they would have jumped at him because he has insane talent.

The problem is, that despite repeated warnings, Garlett failed to show the necessary desire, dedication and discipline required.

He couldn't even last a couple of weeks with discipline let alone a career.

Garlett knew EXACTLY what the consequences would be and he still couldn't help himself.

No wonder clubs were scared away.

Regardless of issues with other players, all he needed to do was knuckle down, train hard and stay at home for a couple of weeks and he would be an AFL player today. If he couldn't even manage that to get drafted, how would he manage it on a daily basis at a professional club?

He has nobody to blame but himself.

that is your opinion Underdog, plenty of others have a different opinion..

personally I dont think Garlett gets it all and has trouble processing the difference between actions and consequences..

that is why i would have given him a chance, surround him with the same professional support mechanisms an AFL club can provide which he doesnt get at WAFL level and then see how he would go..

its just an opinion and I do also think that peopel shoudlnt judge an 18 year old kid so harshly and expect him to display the maturity of someone much older, some kids do take time and need support..and that is inside and outside of footy..

Interesting story from the Herald Sun - view on Swan Districts' Phil Smart, Dayle Garlett, Lewis Jetta and Gerard Neesham with regards to Lewis Jetta turning it around.

Normal 18 year olds who are dedicated to their footy would have absolutely no problem complying with club wishes for a couple of weeks after being totally overlooked in the ND. Let's not pretend that training hard and not going out for a few weeks for the sake of a career requires a high level of maturity.

The clubs essentially said "behave in this manner" which was straightforward and yet he didn't. It's also a perfectly reasonable request.

Again, it was his choice and his responsibility. Clubs would rather recruit someone less skilled but with the required behaviour and dedication then a talented player with no desire, dedication or discipline. Most organisations would be the same.

I hope he turns it around and it's the kick in the guts he needs. However, I'm not so sure considering missing out on the National Draft appeared to have no effect.

Underdog - we currently have players on AFL lists who despite all the education and counselling in the world still choose to take drugs so the world is not full of perfect people..are these normal blokes dedicated to their footy ?

people speed in cars, talk on mobile phones whilst driving - the world is full of people doing things which they know they are not supposed to be doing..

he's 18 and needs support and guidance like plenty of other people in society do..hopefully the AFL spends some money and sets up some support for these kids - not just Garlett but the 4-5 others who missed the draft this year due to different reasons - Garlett, Taylor, Warrell, Yarren, Bedford..
