Funny thing BH....these kids today not kicking the footy or playing driveway cricket are actually the offspring of the generation of kids like us that did do all those things....so not sure who to point the finger at really.....sad eh?

Today's AFL is sometimes sublime, and other times abysmal as a spectacle.

Much as AFL/WAFL/etc etc has been over many many decades.

Us old men on this forum railing against what is happening today is not going to change that one iota.

JS as a young tacker after watching your beloved "Maroons" in action I have no doubt you would have tried emulating your heroes of the day- Tom Outridge Snr, Phil Matson, Snowy Hamilton, Pat Rodriguez, Johnny Leonard etc at Mueller Park before getting on your penny farthing and peddling home!

BH -- no, I missed it Bease, which is a pain; I was at the round 9 or 10 game between the two sides at Bassendean; winning that day, SD, more or less guaranteed that they would win the 20,000 for winning twelve straight; naturally, that, team also won all the money on offer, another feather in its football cap.

Did SD win the Rodrgigues Shield in 1980?

thanks bease, it was a good all round effort by the club that year. One thing i have noticed just going through the scores, is that the side often lost the first quarter in games. Your a good side when you can win 18 games playing, effectively, three quarters of football.

Does anyone remember this trait of the team?

Interesting pickup Ark. The only game I remember that applying to was Round 12 in the exceptionally wet game at Bassendean against your mob.

SH: thanks mate -- as i said only just noticed it yesterday, although at the time, I do remember Subi leading at quarter time when the black and whites were going for their 12th straight win to win the money. It was a very wet day.

One thing to remember is that Swan Districts were still emerging as a Powerhouse and had a mixture of experience & youth gelling
It might be some part of explanation for some quiet first quarters but certainly in the first 10 or 11 games Swans finished off games strongly
their scoring that season proves that

I hadnt noticed that AR, it has been rare for us to put 4 solid quarters of football together over the course of a season for most of the time I have followed SD we always seem to nod off during a game sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes a qtr, sometimes 4 qtrs of late! :pinch:
