waflfootyfacts.net/season/games/stats.php?GameID=6232

Would this be the game that Swans supporters put forward as their best effort in the qualifying rounds?

Extremely good after quarter time against a fine side on its home ground. Did SD win reasonably regularly at Fremantle up to 1980?

Did you mean our best win in 1980 AR?
If so, I would say yes it was our high point of that season, we had won 12 in a row at that point and went on to win another 6 more in a row to make it 18 in total until we came a cropper against SF the next time we met them in the wet at Basso.
We actually went ok at Fremantle Oval around that time I think we beat them down there a few times in the late 70s when we were rock bottom with Mark Olsen kicking a bag.

yes mate, that is exactly what i was asking; you know i celebrate the 1980 side a little bit, the side's exploits having stuck in the memory.I would agree wit you, but there were some other historic wins the club had that year which people might want to discuss.

those would probably be the big scores & wins against East Fremantle - up to that point Swans had a reasonably barren record against East Fremantle

southerner: exactly right: that side achieved a lot of things including highest winning margins against the following:

WP
S
EF

a very good effort indeed considerin WP were second on the ladder after round seven. There is also the possibility that the side was the first to beat every other club in the qualifying round. For example in 1961, the club lost to EP three times before the finals. This makes the win at Fremantle in 1980 genuinely historic.

AR I think we either kicked our highest score, had our biggest winning margin and or our longest winning streak against most of the other WAFL clubs in that John Todd era with the odd exception.

Thinking back to that 1980 season the record 126pt win against WP in front of a record Bassendean Oval crowd of around 23k would also be right up there as well, as WP always had a good record against us.

Swans had a lot of trouble against East Perth-West Perth-East Fremantle. That was over 3 decades.50's,60'and 70's.Don't think we won at Leederville oval for over 15 years.
Even in 1974+75 when Swans narrowly lost in preliminary finals. We only beat EP once in those 2 seasons.
Round1 -1980 beating the Sharks by over 100 points.Could count on one hand the times we had beaten them by over 10 goals.
Gave WP a hiding at Basso. Then won by 1 point after being 7 goals down at qtr time.
And went on a 13 v 2 winning streak over East Perth. From the second round in 1979 to 1983.

Agree with Southerner. The 1980 season started with a tremendous bang over a club we often struggled against either at home or especially away. It took us ten-years to win at EF - we never achieved it during 1961-1963 - and Perth Oval wasn't much better. I found 1980 strange because the defining game for me was Round 1.

Thanks everyone for the great posts. Just as a comparison, and again to highlight what a great side the 1980 SD team was, I don't think Subi beat every other club in the league until 1985; even than, we had to wait until round 21 against EF, coming from behind to eventually et over the line. For example, in 1973, we never beat WP full stop before gf day.

SH & AR I am sure I heard Keith Slater once say he never played in a winning side at EF Oval during his playing career?
