Watson’s arrival will help offset the expected loss of captain Rory O’Brien, who has shocked East Fremantle by asking for a transfer back to his original club Peel.

The 2013 Sandover medallist told Sharks officials the travel burden from his home and work near Mandurah was becoming too arduous.

O’Brien, 29, is contracted to East Fremantle next year, which means there is no set amount for a transfer fee. But it is understood the Sharks will not stand in his way and will accept a player swap with the Thunder if a suitable transfer fee cannot be negotiated."

O’Brien is one of the most durable players in the WAFL, having played all 108 possible matches since joining the Sharks in 2011. He has won three Lynn medals as East Fremantle’s best-and-fairest player to go with two Dudley Tucker medals in 92 matches at Peel.
