From the westonline: "Luke McPharlin is returning to his WAFL roots, with the retired Fremantle defender agreeing to become a back-line coach at East Fremantle.

The 256-game star will take up the part-time role in his first meaningful contribution with the Sharks since being drafted from the club as a colts player 16 years ago.

McPharlin will work with East Fremantle’s developing defenders in two training sessions a week at ATOM Stadium, and some of next season’s matches.

The role has been structured around the 2012 All-Australian completing his pharmacy studies at Curtin University.

McPharlin, regarded as one of the AFL’s premier power defenders in the past decade, retired in September.

East Fremantle football manager Darryn Fry said McPharlin wanted to develop his coaching skills.

“For him to come back when many of those people in his time at the club aren’t around us at the moment is just absolutely fantastic,” Fry said.

“It’s a credit to his character that he’s come back to the place where it all started for him.”
