Oh dear, that is farcical after all the pomp and chest pumping outrage by Perth blocking the transfer, to then phark it up with a clerical error, does not bode well.

The spite-fullness was probably just to keep their very low IQ supporters cornered but sounds as if decency has prevailed in the end.

Cody Leggett’s bitter clearance dispute has ended in a fiasco after he joined his target club East Fremantle when accident-prone Perth inadvertently deregistered him.

The subject of a nine-month dispute in which Perth repeatedly refused to clear the talented utility player to the Sharks, saying it was a matter of principle that Leggett be held to his contract, the matter turned into a debacle this week when the Demons removed him from their primary playing list.

Leggett’s contract was voided once he was deregistered on Wednesday.

It is understood the Perth official responsible for the blunder was not aware the normal June 30 clearance deadline had been extended to July 31 this year.

East Fremantle promptly registered the 24-year-old and intend to play him in their reserves scratch match against Claremont tomorrow morning.

They will pay Perth an $8000 transfer fee, well down on the $20,000 they offered the Demons when Leggett, pictured, declared he wanted to join them.

Perth president Bob Shields confirmed Leggett’s deregistration was an administrative error.

“We will deal with it and be the stronger for it,” Shields said. “We will take the transfer fee and get on with winning football games.”

It is the second time in three years that Perth have lost a required player due to a registration error.

Perth paid West Perth $5000 to clear ruckman Tim Sutherland in 2017 but he was able to move to Subiaco for free three months later because the Demons had failed to register him.

Perth players were furious at training on Wednesday when Shields told them of Leggett’s release.

The Perth board, staff and players had been adamant that Leggett would not be cleared with Shields saying in February the matter had galvanised the club.

Leggett took the matter to arbitration in February but WAFL arbitrator Brendan Taylor ruled that he had a valid contract with Perth and was not eligible for a transfer to East Fremantle.
