Fantastic display of rebounding, fast free flowing, pinpoint footy..lots of great names playing for both sides....the speed and hardness of the game was amazing, counter attack after counter attack from both sides....Collards x 3 streaming out of defence for SF, Rioli steering the ship thru the middle for SF....Matera burning up n down his wing.... for EF the speed and dash of Edgar, Rowe, Thorne and even Christie was a highlight....Browning and O'Sullivan dominating the air in their respective zones....the mobility of the big boys in Tunbridge and Durack for EF....Cooper at times oozed genuine class....much like Wrensted did for EF....Peake, whilst slower, still hitting packs taking vice like marks....even with a load of quality out of the comp due to the Eagles etc...the WAFL definitely looked alive and kicking back in 89....Great memories indeed....thanks again to all concerned for teeing it up...pity some unnecessary comments / posts popped up from time to time during the match....yeah we know EF oval is dump....FFS just let it go for an hour or two and just relive those great WAFL memories and watch the farking game.
Wonderful to have all these games replayed isn't it Freezin? On Saturday night I enjoyed watching the 1983 Grand Final in front of a 45K+ crowd at Subiaco. They were the Halcyon pre AFL days of our competition.
Hopefully we will get some live WAFL at some stage this year but if not these replays will be a real compensation and I will be tuning in every week to get my fix.
Actually speaking of East Fremantle Oval, the Sharks home ground was the venue for a very fond memory for this Swans supporter and would you believe there was no black and white to be seen anywhere on this particular day!
I'm not sure when you relocated to NZ but if you were still in Perth, no doubt you would have attended the Foundation day derby of 2009. It was a lovely sunny monday holiday and I made a last minute decison to attend the game with a friend and boy was I glad I did!
On my arrival at the ground I was amazed to see the queue at the entrance stretching out a few hundred metres down the street. I had not seen that at a WAFL game since the 80's. More than 11,000 people packed the ground that day. It was wonderful to see the bank on the scoreboard wing absolutely packed.
The game itself was a thriller with the Sharks getting home by a point but it was a see saw affair all afternoon ( SF were 5 goals in front at quarter time) . I may be wrong but that would probably be the last time there was 10,000+ at a qualifying round WAFL match. Would love to see that game again if Sean has a copy
Here is the game summary thanks to Ricks site
