Have loved the Foxtel cup, but I can't help but wonder - are we watching the future of club footy? Think of the possibilities. Club mergers, divisions and perhaps the AFL giving it some respect?

Now for the GF...we owe the Tiges a couple, hope we can repay them in the big one. EF v Clare - how good is WA footy?

always a wrap for tom howlett.unfortunately got ruined by one coaches obsession with instant success by non zone recruiting.can see the difference this year with several local players getting a game without non zoners restricting their progress.point in case is arthur bennell who was held back by the recruitment of kyanga.was always going to be a better foot baller.i hope tommy gets a chance of being drafted but hope we get some of the draft fee if he makes it.

don't worry tom wouldn't want one cent to go to ep

If he does get drafted I hope it is to the Eastern States.

I was at a client's place in Gosnells & caught a few glimpses of the game. It was unbelievable to see the amount of water on the ground. It has been very pleasing for the team to put in 2 very good performances in this competition & to make the Grand Final. Although the WAFL Premiership is the main goal during the season, I would be seriously chuffed if we won the competition. I also heard on 91.3 that the Reserves Players for the Sharks will receive a share of the prize money from the completion, which is a wonderful gesture from the club.

looking into the future i see a possibility of the 3 main state leagues combining to form a 2nd tier national comp. given the quantity of sides in the vfl, they could continue on alone as a single entity.

but a combined wafl/sanfl comp with 18 clubs or perhaps an extra couple of tasmanian clubs could form a very good league. i have heard of this idea before somewhere and i didnt really give it much credit. however if foxtel and perhaps a commercial network (there seems to be plenty of them these days) got involved, it could work. but it would require some serious planning and corporate support. both of which could evolve with the incentive of major networks getting involved. would be incredible too for developing and fast tracking afl footballers too.

it works in the UK with the EPL, championship league, division 1, etc etc.
no reason why it couldnt work here . imagine how great it would be to watch say a Swan Districts play Central Districts at Bassendean, or watch Port Magpies play South Fremantle at the Adelaide Oval live of Foxtel for serious points. and we would still have our fremantle & perth derbies and local rivalries along the way. the south aussies too would keep local rivalries. but it would be a wonderful alternative for the football purist and i have no doubt it would get the public reignited with these great local clubs again.

perhaps pie in the sky stuff, but who knows in 5 or 10 years. it would certainly regenerate suburban culture in football. which has been lost with the afl in a sense. i feel many crave that battle cry attitude again. its something to think about as i have my doubts about all clubs survival beyond our lifetimes. can they all sustain it? maybe a change of tactic and approach could not only maintain survival of local football clubs, but send us into a whole new level we would never have achieved by simply doing nothing. or at least putting it on the table. nothing to lose either.

just a thought for the day & put it out there

most WAFL clubs can't even afford a bus to get their side to away games mate......imagine the cost for interstate travel?.....think it's a great idea, but financially most WAFL clubs are on the breadline.....not too sure about the SAFL clubs?

i understand that freeze i was thinking more in terms of foxtel covering those costs like they do now, and of course if corporate backers came in to make such a competition viable.

i was curious if the traditional wafl fan would support it. beyond our lifetimes i fear for the future unless something like this can happen.

would others like to see their club on a national stage every week if it were possible? and i reiterate - possible.

Foxtel pays for all transport and accommodation costs including medical etc as far as I am aware.. Suppose no one would play otherwise

Interesting. I like the idea of the foxtel cup, but it needs some fine tuning. East freo had a bye yesterday - why not play werribee on a saturday instead of mid week. or it could of been a curtain raiser for the derby today. it was the same against norwood. we had a bye that week too. Small crowds and the huge distances are a problem. England is small, has 55 million people , excellent infrastructure and Football is huge.

foxtel covers afl on Saturdays hence why they are played on a Tuesday night
