I’ve been looking at buying a new block in my town to build a house on for a while now and it’s got me stuffed as to why Developers/town planners don’t have any no through roads anymore? As a parent of youngsters I would gladly pay much extra dough for a block on one. I was lucky to grow up on a “dead end street”, it seems like they were everywhere in Perth developments of the 1970s and 80s.

Other way around I would have thought. That’s what I love about where I live. It’s a grid of long dead straight roads, not a cul de sac within coooeee, no speed bumps or chicanes and don’t don’t to swerve around the little obstacle course to get in and out of a roundabout. Hopefully my local council don’t have plans to fuck it up.

Has anyone seen what Belmont City council has done to Belmont Avenue? Used to be a beautiful wide street now they’ve narrowed the road for what? To make the verges in front of old businesses wider. What purpose does that serve? Those town planners should face a firing squad at dawn.

There are plenty of no through roads in and around the Hills area TOO where I grew up.

Cul-de-sac's were designed so that only the residents used that street, safer for families and kids. The old grid pattern was just easier for the developers but created untold numbers of intersections which was not great for traffic safety. Long straight wide stretches of road ala Belmont Ave and the like have sadly become playgrounds for hoons and street racers, so once again a brain dead minority have caused a change for the majority.

On the flipside things are heading back to more grid like formats to encourage sustainable house design, so every site has one full boundary facing north which allows for good solar design principles and northern roof space for solar panels.
