Ron Alexander has enjoyed a career of accomplishment on and off the sporting field. He was a ruckman of class throughout his playing days, among the top of his craft in two states, culminating in a fine coaching career, and is a member of the Western Australian Football Hall Of Fame. Alexander started his league football at East Perth in 1971, where his ruck skills bloomed early. An imposing tap ruckman, he was agile for a big man, and did a lot of work around the ground or when moved into a key position, and was also a dangerous forward when required. A key mover in East Perth’s 1972 premiership, he was unstoppable in 1974, winning his club’s fairest and best award as well as a Simpson Medal in a state game against Victoria that year. Alexander captained the Royals the following year, but it was only a matter of time before the offers rolled in from Victoria.1976 saw Ron Alexander in Fitzroy colours, and he was to become another West Australian ruckman to take the VFL by storm. He played 133 games in six years with Fitzroy, in the process captaining the club , winning a fairest and best, and representing Victoria. In 1982 East Fremantle upset the Royals by appointing Alexander captain coach. Still a formidable player, he was an inspirational leader for the blue and whites, both as a ruckman, and as his career wound down, a permanent forward, heading Old East’s goalkicking list (along with Jeff Cassidy) in 1984 with 52 goals. East Fremantle and Alexander achieved the premiership they deserved in 1985, and immediately afterwards Ron Alexander announced his retirement as a player. He had played 77 games with East Fremantle, 98 at East Perth, and 133 for Fitzroy, in a grand career of 308 games of league football.    Staying on as coach of East Fremantle the following year, Alexander was in 1987 appointed to coach the West Coast Eagles in their first season in the then VFL.  His year at the helm was not an unreasonable one on face value, with eleven wins to occupy eight spot on the ladder, but it was obviously not good enough for the West Coast heirachy and he was replaced by John Todd in 1988. Since his playing and coaching life ended, Alexander has been involved in football in many capacities, whether as part of his job at the Department of Sport and Recreation, or in his personal time, and has often made himself available for advice or help. He is still a keen football fan, and is a regular at AFL matches at Subiaco. In 2017 the WA Government decided to merge the Department with the Departments of Local Government, Culture and Arts, Racing Gaming and Liquor and Office of Muliticultural Interests. Under Ron’s leadership, DSR was regarded as the most responsive and best led government department in the State. On the merging with other departments a State treasure was lost to mediocrity . In the Queen's Birthday 2019 Honours List, Alexander was made a Member of the Order of Australia "for significant service to sport and recreation, and to public administration."
