Deverick (Mick)  Cronin had the unique honour of both playing and umpiring in  Australian Football Carnivals.Winner of the inaugural Tassie Medal at the 1937 Perth Carnival, when he was outstanding in Western Australia’s rout of South Australia by nineteen goals and the eight point loss to Victoria, Cronin returned to carnival action in Hobart a decade later as an umpire.  Mick Cronin is also well remembered as an entertaining, forthright, and controversial panelist on the World Of Football show on Channel Seven.Debuting for East Perth in 1929, he represented Western Australia for ten consecutive seasons after his initial selection in 1930, captained the Royals when they won the 1936 premiership, coached the side for four seasons, and was State coach in 1951. He was fairest and best for East Perth in 1931.Cronin joined the army for the duration of World War Two, and turned his hand to umpiring service matches. Coaching juniors on his discharge in 1946, he became a league umpire a year later.A dashing and enigmatic centreman, Mick was an imposing and inspirational footballer. His playing, coaching, and umpiring career spanned a quarter of a century in which he played a hundred and seventy six games with East Perth and twelve for Western Australia. He was also a talented cricketer, representing Subiaco at first grade level.Mick Cronin was inducted into the Western Australian Football Hall Of Fame in 2006, and in the same year was included in East Perth’s official Team of the Century.
