Looking gone twenty minutes into the last quarter, Claremont rallied to win the game by four points. It was a trip to Melbourne to be best man at Denis and Wendy Marshall’s wedding that led to Ken Mann’s signing with St Kilda. “The Saints were after a wingman, so they could release centreliner and later VFL boss Ross Oakley to play as a ruck rover,” Ken recalled. “I joined them in  65, and played the first ten games of the season. In round eleven I struck Geelong’s Wayne Closter in the mud at Geelong and ended up in the reserves the following week. From then on I was on the fringe. After the amazing 1966 premiership, the side lost their first six rounds of the 1967 season, so a cleanout took place, anyone over a certain age was under pressure.”Mann went to VFA club Sandringham, where he played in the centre with aplomb, the side making the grand final. But a leg injury in the last qualifying round was to spell the end for Ken. He returned to Perth, acting as runner and chairman of selectors under coach Denis Marshall, then seeing out two five year stints on the committee of the club. A Swan Brewery employee for twenty years, Mann worked for various companies as an accountant before retiring “for the sixth and final time” recently. His interests these days centre mostly on the water, where he can be found on his twenty six foot Guardian. He and Glenis have recently moved to the ocean front, and are enjoying the life.Besides Peter, they have two other sons, Tim and Richard. Ken Mann was a good player for Claremont in a tough period for the club, highlighted by a premiership flag. Whether or not there will be a fifth addition to the Mann book of premiership flags is yet to be seen. “That is not an issue with me.  The grandchildren are all happy, healthy and enjoy wonderful family life” was his comment.
