Carnamah is known for it’s wheatgrowing and is a nice place to stop on a long drive, but the town has produced at least two star footballers. One was Claremont’s Kevin Clune, and the other was West Perth star Ken Ashdown.Ken Ashdown made his league debut as a forward with West Perth in 1949, and kicked three goals in the grand final that year against South Fremantle, which yielded a flag for the Cardinals. He was at centre half forward in a repeat performance against the same side two years later for premiership success once more. But it was as a strong resolute defender with a piercing kick that Ashdown will be remembered. He played nine games with Western Australia from 1951 onwards, mainly as a half back flanker, and was one of West Perth’s most consistent and flexible players of the fifties. He was a durable player, being the only member of the 49 and 51 premiership sides to still be around for the next flag in 1960. He retired in 1961, after putting together 218 quality appearances for West Perth.Ken could also lay claim to being more adaptable than most..he played a game in the snow.  It was in London in 1955 that an Australian Rules challenge was made(probably over a pint somewhere) by someone with an Aussie accent on behalf of  his compatriots in London against the combined power of Cambridge and Oxford Universities. From a small beginning the idea grew legs to the extent that a department store sponsored the ground, a couple of English soccer clubs provided the outfits, television cameras were at the ready, and the Australian High Commissioner was right behind it, with items of use for the big match suddenly appearing, much to the chagrin of the Australian Football Council, who wanted no part of it. Indeed, Qantas had offered to fly outfits from Australia, but the AFC refused permission. The scholars started promisingly, with a few Aussies in their ranks, but the compatriots had scoured the city for talent and had recruited well. Among the recruits was Ken Ashdown, who managed to get onto a few droppies despite the snow, as his side won easily.  Meanwhile, the crowd were unimpressed with the footy skills in the snow, and repaired to a few nearby public houses. Ken Ashdown was selected in West Perth’s Team Of The Century in 2000, a deserved honour for one of West Perth’s greatest defenders.
