Think centre half back and you think Doug Green.  Doug Green was the footballer’s footballer.  A great team man, he was a defender who went about his job like a tradesman, nullifying his opponent in a contest and in the next breath making a clearing dash out of defence. From the country town of Trayning, Green was nineteen when he made his league debut with East Fremantle in 1970.  He soon made the key centre half back position his, first for the blue and whites, then with WA.Not overly tall at 6 foot 2(188cm) he was agile and rangy with a penchant for the spoil and a liking for a high mark, which made him a tough assignment for an opposition centre half forward.  There were no frills to Green, he just gave a hundred percent all day...if there was a model for any young aspiring player it was him. After being an integral part of the 1974 premiership, the 24 year old Green took over the mantle of captain of East Fremantle. He went on to play 180 games for the blue and whites.Doug Green played 13 times for the state, five of those as captain. He won one Lynne Medal and was runner up six times. He was also recognised by the Past Players Association with awards for state games in 1976 and 77.He was still at the top of his game when he retired to return to the farm after helping bring home the bacon again in 1979.  Such was the man’s esteem  that halfway through the following season  he was lured to the struggling South Melbourne, where, despite the layoff and lack of practice, he played out the remainder of the season in the VFL in the same manner he had done with East Fremantle  throughout his career.       East Fremantle have been known not only for their champion teams but the number of star players that have worn the blue and white, but none were better at their craft or more populaThink centre half back and you think Doug Green.
