And AR did you mean Peter Belford?
Peter Bedford was the ex S.M/Carlton Brownlow Medallist recruited from VFA club Port Melbourne.

Can anyone confirm that Peter Bedford who played 1 game for Subi in '81 is indeed the brownlow medalist. I followed subi closely then and cant recall us securing a brownlow medalist (although we have on two previous occasions).
It it the case does anyone know the story behind his recruitment

I'm no Subiphile, oobisoobi, but I'm pretty sure the player concerned was Peter Belford and not Peter Bedford.
The 1981 Footy Register and Ric Gauci's wonderful website both list Peter Belford (1 game, 2 goals).
Peter Bedford would've been 34 in 1981, having finished at South Melbourne in 1976 and Carlton in 1978 before returning to Port Melbourne in the VFA.
Speaking of Port Melbourne, I have very fond memories of drinking at Molly Blooms pub many moons ago.

AD: what has me intrigued about the whole saga, is that as you know from Ric's site, he kicked two goals and was never seen again. We were not that bloody good that we could give away players whom were capable of kicking two goals in a match in those days.

I thought exactly the same, Ark, though Subi won nine games in 1981.
Not too many blokes have a career average of two goals a game.
Belford's only game was at Lathlain Park in Round 7, 1981.
Perth 22.16 (148) Subi 17.12 (114), one of the Demons' three wins for the year.

We had a pretty good year in 81. Schultz and Bill Valli were great to watch. (How was he enticed to Subi, not much $$ in those days. Did the Cardies not want him back)

Another was Peter Thomas who showed a bit that year and then disappeared.. to EF I think.

Thomas had ability, but once Schultz, Hamilton, Buckenara Murray, he had too much to do; went to old easts in the mid 80s and played a few games.

Greg Kelly played centre for us in the first game in 1982.

AR what happened to some of the promising young players Armstrong introduced to League footy in the early 80s I speak of the likes of-
Brad Lohoar
Mitch Fussell
Ian Tucker
Greg Kelly
Paul Clune
Bevan Warner
Michael Mort
etc
Bunton seemed to clear a fair few out others stayed the course- B.Taylor, D.Lamb, Dean, Zanotti, Breman, Keene, Scott, Lee, C.Brown etc

BH: great post, I think there were a few things going on:

some probably did not suit his style of play
a few got injurred or lost form -- Michael Mort, Peter Thomas Mitch Fussell
good recruits: Leon Perry, Sells, Willet, Spencer, Carpenter
we were lucky to have talent coming through the club -- MacNish, Georgie, a very young Langdon

On the relationship between Ken Armstrong and the Bunton era, itself BH, I have always given credit to Ken for the 1986 premiership -- similar, in fact, to how many Subi supporters mention Bunton's role in the lead up to the Smith premiership in 1973.

Yep correct AR....Fussell broke his leg down at Freo Oval from memory and never really was the same...I think Mort did a knee which was a shame as he was a real talent...Warner played quite a few games and moved on...the others I'm not sure about.
