Great to see the young ins Moore, Elliot, Hoskins & Bestry stand up in that sort of game particularly Bestry who had a good crack against the giants in the ruck. Best game from Horse for a while, Lockyer just ahead of Robo & Menegola best for me.
DG, real character win it could be said against a team that lacked that character in the last quarter after putting themselves in a winning position at 3/4 time.
If ever Wart were going to have an easy run at beating us it was this game, we had front liners in Boland, Delahunty, Rumble, & Deluca out, Madut was dropped to the 2's and we brought in a few yougsters to fill those gaps. Bestry is a real prospect and has put some kilo's on his slight frame from last year, while we got smashed in the hit-outs, something that has happened in just about every game, he competed really well around the ground and took some good grabs, Clanger was an absolute warrior in the packs, his strong bodywork against the WART monsters had a big influence on the game, he was second only to Lockyers influence. Moore had a great game, never too a backward step and his ball handling and kicking were very good. Mids were very even apart from Phez who had a quiet one by his standards, Wortho didn't miss a beat coming back after injury. A super team effort againts the pro's.
Solid 1st quarter set up a small lead then outscored them by a goal in the 2nd qtr but Wart came on strong and physical in the 3rd and looked like they would lead at 3/4 time with a 2.3 to 0.2 qtr, our goal kicking yips cam back and we missed a couple of sitters late in the 3rd but managed to hold onto a 1 point lead.
Schoey read them the riot act at 3/4 time and to their credit the boys responded with a super commitment to the contest, putting it all on the line which saw WART fade badly with a 5.4 to 2.0 last qtr. Horse did what he does best and lead from the front in the last, his gut running was the spark for the boys to lift to another gear and run over the top of the Ferals. WART couldn't or didn't want to do the hard yards when it counted, with so many fulltime super fit(by comparison) AFL listed players that's inexcusable and following the same thing in last years GF, you have to wonder what sort of spirit or lack thereof the EPFC now has given the Eagles massive influence on the clubs culture.
Interesting that there was a very low free kick count just 20 for the whole game and low and behold we managed to break even and that's with Parry being one of the maggots. Must say that out of a team total of 10 frees, Wolfy managed to convince the umps to give him 3 or 4 in front of goals that gave him 3 goals, not close enough to see if they were soft or not but he does put himself at the bottom of the contest so maybe ... anyway the maggots had no influence on the result.
Bye next week which will see some of those injured boys get a good chance to recover, then it's Perth at Leedo a danger game if we aren't switched on, followed by a massive game against Swans up at Bombo Valley.
