Subi would have provided the closest thing to an AFL environment you could get with facilities, support staff and professionalism, so would not have been a big jump going back to Port where he was already well respected. His focus & preparation has always been thorough and fastidious to the point of anal!! If he stays at Port next year he will have a bigger role given the AFL football departments will be reduced along with player lists.
His biggest achievement was in his second season as coach, the 2014 WAFL flag against raging favourites East Eagles. The 2 losses to Freo cut deep and that's why he delayed going to AFL for that one extra season in which he oversaw the perfect season.

Sorry S.S i know the Subi folk revere that 2014 premiership side as some sort of Anzac Heroes but i never shared the view that we were hot favourites that day,as Subi had beaten us twice that year in the qualifying rounds, and when the heavens opened up i thought it was a 50/50 game particularly with Subi's top VFL recruits in Boland,Twomey,Bristow,Delahunty,Phelan, and Mahoney would probably revel in those conditions and one of them actually won the Simpson, and Josh Hills effort in the forward pocket where he stood and watched a ''so called team mate''get tackled by an on coming opponent without giving a shepherd or block was one of the most pathetic efforts i have ever seen and little wonder 8 out of the 11 who represented us that day were de-listed shortly after, and i can tell you it was the one and only Grand Final loss i've experienced that never hurt one iota.

rl: you won the minor premiership by two games
ep won the 2nd seml final reasonably easily
we were lucky to be in the gf because EF kicked '7.26' in the preliminary final the previous week

The wet weather was a big leveller Ark and the apathy of players like Hill was quite evident to me during the year and alot of them went into that Grand Final knowing that their exit papers on the Eagles list were already stamped, and i myself with the over representation of Eagles in the side, and the ensuing wet weather was quite apathetic about going to the game, but ended up going to see a possible flag victory for club stalwart Craig Wulff which would've been a reward for his great service to the club, and i felt for him more than anything.

Royall I understand you wanting to down play it, but every media scribe had EP as clear favourites, if they had played the same as they did in the 2nd semi they would have won the flag. Maybe some over confidence played a big part (like with EF in '86) but Subi went in with a nothing to lose nothing to prove mentality and won the day against the odds. I did feel for Wulffy, he was a real warier for your mob and a great leader, sad he was let down by a few WC prima donna's in that pivotal 3rd qtr, pretty even game apart from that.

Not trying to downplay it S.S i was just relaying the fact that i thought the game in my mind was no foregone conclusion particularly in the wet conditions, and on the subject of Wulffy, the inept efforts of WC prima donnas in 2016 when Claremont belted us on Wulffy's club record breaking day was the reason i walked away from the club until they bubbled the alignment.
