He joined ABC Sport in Perth in January 1990.

He commentated at four Olympic Games – Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 – principally calling cycling and co-hosted the coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies in Athens and Beijing.

He also commentated the track and field for ABC-TV at the 1996 and 2000 Paralympic Games and worked on four Commonwealth Games – Kuala Lumpur 1998, Manchester 2002, Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010 – calling cycling and co-hosting the opening and closing ceremonies at each.

Mitchell commentated nearly 200 Test and limited-overs cricket matches, covering 13 overseas tours to England, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.

He was well known for his repartee with on air with former Australian Test spinner, Kerry O'Keeffe.

Mitchell called over 900 AFL and WAFL games for the ABC on both television and radio and NBL and WNBL on both mediums.

During his career with the ABC he commentated over 20 sports including world championships in cycling, water polo and triathlon.

What is your criteria for "good" and "up to it" Bazz?

Spot on Jackspratt. That's a resume that any broadcaster would be proud of. He would have been still doing his stuff at the ABC as a senior commentator had it not been for his mental health issues. He was nick named "the oracle" because of his ability to recall sporting facts that most people would not be able to remember. Skull had a wonderful rapport with him as well.

About the only thing I can add, Glen is still very highly regarded in the media and the community. I for one hope he continues free-lancing in the media. Don't need to be in the crappy mainstream media to be well known. Very little quality within the main stream media nowadays .From what I heard, we are lucky Mitchell is still around.

I won't miss the annoying nasally twang voice of this Victorian centric commentator
"SEN clearly has a desire to change the substance of what they do, thus change the perception. I reckon that is a really powerful combination if they are able to achieve that and that's why I'm going there"
WANKER!
