The godson of former prime minister Kevin Rudd has allegedly been assaulted in Brisbane by a man who was tearing down rainbow flags put up in support of same-sex marriage.

Sadly the two incidents highlighted by Bazza & Jack highlight what extremism does to any debate. Both acts are reprehensible and have damaged both sides of the argument, obviously the Abbott incident will get way more publicity so will damage the yes campaign more than the No one. Our public figures should never be subject to these sorts of left or right wing extremism, that being said, Tony Abbott is possibly the most divisive public figure/pollie this country has ever seen, so in his own right, he is an extremist, in the same delusional hatefull boat at that extreme catholic homophobe Bernardi.

How is Abbot an extremist? He has a view, the same way the gay lobby has there opinion on the question.

Hitler and Stalin were extremists both in their ideologies and actions.

We are suppose to have 'freedom of speech' in this country, but it is in danger of late. One man's 'freedom of speech' is another man's 'hate speech'. The country needs to decide.

I can think of some pretty divisive politicians just in my life-time, startting with Keating and Hewson.

The issue should have been decided by those PAID to do it. That is, those elected. If they are not willing to do their job should resign. The survey has no legitimacy; what was said could or would happen is happening; and it is an outrageous waste of $120 million that could and SHOULD have been spent far better.

the problem with a conscience vote of pollies 42 is that they're expressing their own opinions and not necessarily that of their constituents. at least with a survey we'll know how the majority of Australians who were prepared to respond actually think....and before you say it I agree that result will be inconsistent as sending in a return was not compulsory.
